Three years ago, the state Department of Education (DOE) ordered studies to look at consolidation of school districts, in particular creating districts encompassing kindergarten through the twelfth grade but those studies to have been undertaken by state colleges were not funded.

Most residents’ concerns here are less about money and more about identity and quality.

Could there be a combined Avalon/Stone Harbor/Middle Township board of education on the horizon? Two small grade schools here could see some major changes as both districts look at cost-saving measures, including consolidation with a mainland community.
