MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – For the first time ever, Cape May County’s special education high school students can compete in sports against other special education students in the area.
Cape May County Special Services is teaming up with Cape May Tech to compete in “Unified Soccer” against students from Mainland Regional High School in Atlantic County. The first event took place at Cape May Tech itself.
The program is sponsored by a grant from Special Olympics called Unified Sports. The first game featured a clap out by their classmates, with announcements for each player, a full display from Cape May Tech’s cheerleaders, music, signs made by their peers, and a guest official from the county alongside loads of fans.
This is a truly big win for students who don’t normally get to participate in competitive sports. The final score was 3-2 Mainland and Cape May looks forward to a rematch next season.
