PETERSBURG – When Upper Township engineer Paul Dietrich mentioned the reshaping of some beach areas where cliffing has occurred, Upper Township Committeeman Curtis Corson held up his phone and said he had a picture of a child on the dunes, adding that parents ought to control such situations.
Dietrich said there are currently cliffs of up to 10-12 feet in some areas and a tide could knock them down, taking a person with them.
“We ask people that, if the access is closed, please stay away,” Dietrich said.
The topic came up at the April 24 Upper Township Committee meeting after Dietrich mentioned he believed some beach maintenance was in order in the areas where beaches had been closed because sand erosion had compromised the safety of the beach entrances.
The entrances are simply a walk-over area where beachgoers can get to the beach and waterline. Cliffing has shown up in areas along the coast and can be dangerous to people if the cliffs collapse.
