Upper Seeks Signs to Stop Digging Holes on Beaches

hole dug in sand stock

By Camille Sailer

PETERSBURG – Upper Township Committee member Jay Newman informed the municipal governing body Aug. 8 that the municipality continues to grapple with people digging large holes on its beaches.
Newman, who oversees public safety and is chief of Marmora Volunteer Fire Company, has sounded the alarm about the danger of these holes to unsuspecting beachgoers for several months
“The immediate fix is more signage referring to our municipal ordinance prohibiting them,” said Newman. “These large holes have become real safety and nuisance issues for lifeguard enforcement.”
