AVALON – Damage to the Eighth Street Jetty, from Winter Storm Jonas, in 2016, is more extensive than originally thought, despite Avalon officials’ efforts to analyze the necessary repairs.
Restoration of the compromised jetty was expected to take approximately five months. FEMA has authorized financial support for the project, as part of the disaster funding following the storm. As the contractor began working on the project, additional damage was discovered, requiring the approval of change orders at the March 25 Borough Council meeting.
It is no longer a given that the work can be completed by the original Memorial Day weekend deadline. A decision, whether or not to extend the contractor work into mid-June or demobilize and pick up work on the jetty in the fall, will be made at a later time.
A relatively mild winter also complicated the project by allowing sand to build up on the jetty’s north end, in contrast to the normal flow of sand to the south. The project will now involve removing sand from the jetty’s north end, transferring that sand to the borough’s beaches.
