PETERSBURG – Engineer Paul Dietrich informed Upper Township Committee, at its Jan. 23 meeting, that beach erosion has severely impacted Strathmere.
“With recent winter storms, the erosion is getting worse, and we’ve had to close the Williams Avenue handicapped access ramp,” said Dietrich. “The Army Corps of Engineers reviewed the situation about two weeks ago and we’re still on track for an award of replenishment work for early April and actual work to begin late June, most likely early July. There’s not a lot of beach at all at high tide and now we have a total of four access ramps that are closed.”
Mayor Jay Newman, who also serves as fire chief of the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company, noted, “This will impact our emergency vehicle access, as there’s about 3 feet of scarping at that location.”
Dietrich added that the municipality will be letting residents know about beach conditions and that residents in the affected areas will need to move a bit more south in order to go to the beach.
