Engineer: North Strathmere Beaches ‘Dangerous’

PETERSBURG – Perilous conditions at Strathmere’s north-end beaches were discussed at the township meeting Sept. 12.
With recent storms and full moons, rocks are exposed, and dunes have disappeared to the extent that the scarping has produced 8-foot drop-off cliffs. The edges give way if any weight is put on them.
“It’s a very dangerous situation,” warned engineer Paul Dietrich.
“I am talking to the Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers and am hopeful that the situation can be returned to where it was by this fall and winter,” he continued. “Next year’s planned beach replenishment will improve the situation, taking into account the needs of Ocean City and Sea Isle City to Strathmere’s north and south respectively. We were first in line with the previous replenishment project so maybe that will also be the case this time around.”
