AVALON - The wide beaches and high dunes are back.

The Army Corps of Engineers completed the 2019 Avalon beach replenishment project Nov. 10. The project was completed ahead of schedule.

This year, Avalon received a total of 675,000 cubic yards of sand on its north-end beaches, from Ninth to 20th streets. The replenishment is part of a federal program to rebuild protective beaches and dunes on a three-year cycle. The next federally sponsored replenishment is scheduled for 2022. The borough makes use of back passing efforts to maintain the beaches in intervening years.

Prior to the placement of new sand from Townsend's Inlet, Avalon’s north end suffered serious storm erosion to the dunes. In many places, the beaches had completely disappeared following recent storms.
