WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-NJ) Sept. 24 announced a combined $1.9 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development funding to upgrade the water distribution system in Woodbine.

According to a release, the funding includes a $924,530 grant and an additional $957,000 in federal financing through a low-interest loan.

“This important funding will allow Woodbine to modernize its infrastructure in order to continue delivering residents clean, safe water to drink,” stated Menendez. “Communities across New Jersey are dealing with the challenges of aging pipes and treatment facilities that struggle to handle increasing demand. Investments like these are critical to helping us build a 21st century water infrastructure that both serves our residents today and positions our state to address tomorrow’s needs.”

“Each and every day, water infrastructure across New Jersey and our nation continues to crumble,” Booker stated. “This federal funding will strengthen the Woodbine borough’s water infrastructure, protect the health of our families and our environment, and help lay the foundation for future economic growth.”

The federal funding will be used to advance the extension of the water distribution system along Fidler Hill Road, extend the borough's water system within the municipal airport complex to provide looping of an existing dead-end water main, and upgrade of various components of the borough's water supply and treatment plant.

Additional work includes providing automatic valving and controls for the pressure filters, providing temporary pressure filters during construction, the addition of a substantial amount of storm drainage improvements at the existing water plant site and including air relief valves on the water main extension portion of the project.

The Water Infrastructure Funding Transfer Act, authored by Booker and cosponsored by Menendez, would allow states facing public health challenges from lead in drinking water to transfer additional funds from their Clean Water State Revolving Fund to their Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The bill passed the  Senate and House unanimously and is headed to the President’s desk for his signature.
