AVALON - Winter Storm Jonas compromised the Eighth Street Jetty in Avalon in January 2016.
Following the storm, the borough submitted its claim regarding storm damage to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The borough received funding for repairs to the jetty and other areas of damage.
Over time, it became apparent that damage to the jetty below the waterline had been missed in the initial claims submitted to FEMA. A below-water side sonar scan revealed the damage to be greater than initially thought.
At the Borough Council meeting July 10, Business Administrator Scott Wahl announced FEMA agreed, and awarded an additional $4 million grant for repairs. The funds will allow for the repairs and will also permit the jetty to be raised back to its pre-storm height.
According to Wahl, the repairs will extend the life of beach replenishments and backfills, which will help stabilize the beaches in the north end.
