PETERSBURG - Upper Township Engineer Paul Dietrich informed Upper Township Committee Aug. 12 that during the four-year bridge and road improvements undertaken by the state Department of Transportation, artifacts were uncovered.
Under federal and state law, archaeological investigations are required before any road project. Test excavations revealed a Native American "pre-contact" site dating back thousands of years, along with a historical site dating to the Colonial period.
A collection of the artifacts is displayed at the Upper Township Library, with plans for it to move to the Municipal Building. Then it will be permanently housed at the planned Upper Township Historical Museum in the former municipal building in Tuckahoe.
