CAPE MAY - At its Jan. 7 meeting, Cape May City Council agreed on amendments to a proposed ordinance banning the use of plastic bags and packaging material in the city.

Changes advanced by the city’s Environmental Commission were approved for incorporation, as Cape May is poised to join other beach towns in the county who have taken action against the proliferation of plastic bags, packaging and utensils.

The ordinance had been formally introduced, but City Solicitor Frank Corrado ruled that the changes were of a material nature, and the ordinance would have to be publically advertised before a second reading and required public hearing could be held.

The expressed intent was to schedule the public hearing and final vote for council's Jan. 21 meeting.
