CAPE MAY - City Manager Neil Young notified Cape May City Council that he will step down from his position Dec. 31, the end of his current contract. Young assumed the position after the retirement of Bruce McCloud three years ago.
Young, who has long served as the city’s chief financial officer, will return to that role. A likely internal candidate for the position is Deputy City Manager Jerry Inderwies, Jr.
Under Cape May’s form of government, the city manager is the chief executive officer of the municipality. The mayor, while serving as the ceremonial head of government, is one of five members of the city’s governing body, and has no direct control over municipal department heads.
At the Nov. 6 council meeting, Young’s decision was formally announced, and authorization was given to begin advertising for candidates.
