STONE HARBOR – As parents avidly research summer camp opportunities for their kids, local families have a thrilling new choice this year with the Stone Harbor Fire Camp.
Already into its third year, the camp aims to teach kids about fire safety, escape planning and other safety issues, as well as to familiarize them with fire equipment.
Stone Harbor Council Member, Karl Giulian, explains, “The fire company is always seeking new ways to teach our kids about fire safety. And this camp was, essentially, a much-expanded-upon fire prevention class. We do not want our children to ever become complacent about fire safety.”
Kids in grades one through five are eligible to enroll in Stone Harbor Fire Camp, which will be held at the firehouse on July 14th, 15th and 16th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to participate in smoke evacuation drills and learn about fire trucks, extinguishers, ambulances and other fire equipment, with a few water ice breaks, of course.
As Stone Harbor’s very own volunteer firefighters, the camp counselors, are supremely qualified for the job.
For $40 per child, each camper will receive expert instruction on safety issues, a camp T-shirt, snacks and other prizes.
Even more than that, the campers will learn the most critical lesson of all: awareness.
Giulian adds, “The most important thing that kids (and parents) can away from the camp was that fire safety mistakes can be avoided if you take the time to learn precautionary measures.”
To enroll your child for Stone Harbor Fire Camp, simply visit the firehouse any Thursday evening in July during their regular Open House and complete a registration form.
The camp has space for a maximum of 40 children.
