WILDWOOD - The Wildwood and North Wildwood Fire Departments were dispatched for a building fire Aug. 7 at about 2 a.m., at 222 E. Schellenger Ave., the former Colleen’s Restaurant.
According to a release, the departments found smoke issuing from the building. An all-hands call was requested recalling off-duty city firefighters, along with single apparatus responses from the fire departments of Wildwood Crest, Stone Harbor, Rio Grande, and West Wildwood.
The building has been vacant for approximately two years, and has been slated for demolition at summer's end.
The fire alarm and suppression systems in the building had been disconnected, or shut-off. Firefighters immediately supported the sprinkler system, along with stretching lines for fire extinguishing.
Due to the commercial building's size and being vacant with unknown fire conditions inside, a second alarm was requested that brought single apparatus from the Erma and Villas fire departments.
Firefighters were on scene for about two hours extinguishing pockets of fire between the first and second floors, along with fire extension into the attic. A search of the building was completed with negative findings.
Fire, smoke, and water damage was sustained throughout the building. No injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation by the Wildwood City Fire Department and police department, along with the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Wildwood Crest EMS, Rio Grande EMS and Wildwood police also assisted at the scene.
