CREST HAVEN - Josephine A. Scheid, 36, was arrested in Sarasota, Fla. Nov. 8, and charged on first-degree murder of her mother Oct. 31, 2018.
According to a release from the State Police Col. Patrick J. Callahan and Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland, in December 2018, New Jersey State Police Homicide South Unit received information about the suspicious death of Gabrielle Michaelis, 59, of Belleplain who died Oct. 31, 2018.
A joint investigation was undertaken by the State Police and the County Prosecutor's Office personnel.
During that investigation, on Sept. 23, 2019, the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner ruled Michaelis' death a homicide, and its cause as intoxication due to hydromorphine, alprazolam, and lorazepam.
On Nov. 8, with the assistance of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, detectives with the State Police and Prosecutor's Office arrested Sheid without incident at her residence in Sarasota, Fla.
Scheid was charged with murder, computer criminal activity, abandonment/neglect of an elderly person; endangering an injured victim; criminal restraint; misapplication of entrusted property; perjury; tampering with evidence; and obstructing the administration of law.
She was lodged in the Sarasota County Jail pending extradition back to New Jersey.
Sutherland and Callahan commended the major crime unit detectives from New Jersey State Police Homicide South Unit and the County Prosecutor's Office along with the Sarasota County and Manatee County Sheriff's Offices in Florida and all the law enforcement agencies involved in the homicide investigation.
