COURT HOUSE — College student Vincent Dassario, 18, succumbed to injuries he sustained in Wildwood on May 11, according to a release from County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Wildwood Police Chief Steven Long.

He and his friends were vacationing in Wildwood when Dassario was struck in the head by a bat while walking on Atlantic Avenue at approximately 7:50 p.m. He was being treated at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Dassario died at around noon Monday.

Alberto Martinez, 28, a homeless man whose last address was the 100 block of West Rio Grande Avenue, was arrested shortly after the assault by the Wildwood Police and was originally charged with aggravated assault. As a result of Dassario's death, his charges have been amended to murder. Martinez has been lodged in county jail since his May 11 arrest.

The Southern Regional Medical Examiner's Office was scheduled to perform an autopsy Tuesday, May 25.

According to the release, persons convicted of murder, a first degree crime, are subject to thirty years to life in State Prison.
