Cape May County Education Association presents... Aa Bb Cc The school bell may have stopped ringing, but summer is a great time for all kinds of learning opportunities for kids. Studies show that children who do not read or have access to books during the summer lose up to 2 months of reading performance. All children may fall victim to the “summer slide” if not provided with summer learning opportunities. Here are a few ideas: •Check with your local department of parks and recreation about camps and other activities. •Build reading and writing into everyday activities.Try watching the TV with the sound off and closed captioning on, have your child read the directions for how to play a new game, or have your child help with meals by writing up a grocery list, finding items in the grocery store and reading the recipe aloud during cooking time. •Turn those recycled notebooks and paper into journals and scrapbooks. Encourage your child to write about their summer adventures or spend some time researching and writing community stories. •Visit your local library! Help your child find the right books for their reading level. Consider starting a book club with other children. It‛s a great way to keep the summer learning social and low-key. Remember, there are many things you as a parent can do to help your child stay on track to academic success during summer vacation. THIS SUMMERS HOMEWORK: Have a happy and healthy summer! Be sure to encourage your children to read, write, and get outside! Questions? Comments? Contact
