CAPE MAY – Here is Cape May’s March and April 2014 calendar of events sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) through April 13.
“The Way We Were … Cape May County’s Once Thriving Black Business Communities”
This 15th annual Center for Community Arts (CCA) exhibit will highlight African Americans’ contributions to the local community. At the Carriage House Gallery on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Admission is free. Sherlock Holmes Weekend: New Mystery for 2014! Join Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. Watson for a weekend of mystery and intrigue in the new mystery for 2014, “Sherlock Holmes and the Unforgiven,” Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, 2014. Get into the spirit of things by donning Victorian attire. Stalk the gaslit streets in search of clues and compete for the $250 grand prize and a variety of other valuable gifts as you attempt to solve the mystery. Full weekend packages are available at $200 per couple or $105 per person and include the welcome reception, performances, tour, luncheon and gift. Weekend overnight packages are also available. East Lynne Theater Company presents “Holmes and Carter Mysteries”: Performed in the style of radio shows from the 1930s through the 1950s, is this vintage-radio style production, complete with live sound effects and commercials, featuring two great detectives — Sherlock Holmes Adventure of the Copper Beeches about a governess in peril, and Nick Carter and the Strange Dr. Devolo, in which Manhattan millionaires are missing. While Sherlock Holmes was solving crimes in England, Nick Carter, originally known as “Nicholas” Carter, was busy in Manhattan. Carter first appeared in “The Old Detective’s Pupil” published in Street and Smith’s “New York Weekly” in 1886 – a year before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes’ first caper, “A Study in Scarlet.” In October, 1930, the Sherlock Holmes radio series began with The Adventure of the Copper Beeches and in April, 1943, the Nick Carter series was launched with The Strange Dr. Devolo. Self-guided Wine & Brewery Trail: What’s brewing in Cape May? Some great spirits, as you’ll find out on this tour of three area wineries, Natali Vineyards, Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery and Jessie Creek Winery, plus the Cape May Brewing Company. Take a tour at each stop and sample some of their products. Admission is $15 and includes map with directions. World War II Tower Lookout Museum and Memorial: (Fire Control Tower No. 23) A Museum and Memorial. Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After the award-winning restoration, visitors can climb to the 6th floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts during World War II. The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible. Open Saturdays and Sundays beginning March 29, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. $5 for adults, up to two children (ages 3-12) free with each adult admission (each additional child $2).
