All About Fishing

By Steven Lerario

It`s hard to remember when the sun was out last for any length of time. The weather has been very bad this spring. I have talked to fishermen that are not even going to put their boats in. They all said the same thing — there was never a nice day to get out there and get the boat ready. But I guess we will get though it.
The stripers have been around. You have to brave the weather, which most striper fishermen are used to. Stripers like rough water. Some years ago, I remember taking a ride one evening to Hereford Inlet during a storm with high winds. The water was breaking over the bulkhead.
With the lights from the truck shining on the water I saw fish jumping. My friend said no way. The rods happen to be rigged so, in the rain I thought I saw a (castmaster) and sure enough had a schoolie striper…all throw backs but we had a ball with them and got very wet .
Jim`s Bait in Cape May reports the drum fish bite was good this week in the Delaware Bay. The best bite has been in the morning. The hot spots sare Tussys Slough, the Pintop, and east side of the No. 16 buoy. John Hanstein of Philadelphia weighed a 72-pound drum from the Pintop.
Art Hamler from Pensauken had a 68-pounder from the Pintop.
The seabass fishing is good with a lot of undersized fish and keepers mixed in so a lot of action on the hook.
Murry Campher weighed 4.2-pound seabass from site No. 11.
On the beach front, Poverty Beach has been hot, but stripers have been caught all along the Cape May beach front. Small drum have also showed on the beach, 10 to 30-pound fish.
FYI: I have a fish story this week. A 75-pound drum was caught off the surf at the cove in Cape May we did not get a name we only know it was a local surfer and the fish headed for the tip of the jetty and with rod in hand, had to swim with the fish around the jetty and land the fish from the other side of the jetty. If anyone has any more info on this catch, please Email us.
A few spike weakfish were caught at Cape May Point floating bloodworms.
Sterling Harbor Bait and Tackle reports good drum fishing in the Delaware Bay. Jim Baker of Wildwood weighed a drum tipping the scales at 81 pounds. In the back bays there are a lot of fluke around, but it is still catch and release.
North Wildwood surf has been producing stripers and small drum with clam. Justin Fisler of Wildwood had two black drum up to 25 pounds. Rob Cruz of Cherry Hill had a 38-inch striper caught in the surf at North Wildwood with clam. Sterling Harbor will be holding a Hobie Kayak demo on May 17.
Schmeldey Charters out of South Jersey Marina in Cape May reports fishing this week in the Delaware Bay was a slow pick for drum. Even with the full moon, the rain slowed the bite down, but has marked plenty of fish so when it pops it should be excellent fishing. Capt. Joe still has prime dates open for drum. For charter info call him at 609-463-0857.
Avalon Hodge Podge reports weighing stripers every day. High hook was Bob Helinek with a 14.62-pound, 30-inch striper using clam fish at the TI Inlet.
Crabbing reports have been good behind Avalon. A crabber this week reported having 52 crabs on one outing. That is good crabbing for this time of year.
Sunny give the fishing six barks this week and a couple of wags for the crabbing.
