CREST HAVEN - Cape May County Technical High School students in Communication Arts Technology Program of Study were honored to have their film, "The Great Backyard Bird Count," selected by the Student Reporting Labs (SRL) to be published on the SRL website, shared on social media, distributed through partnerships and aired on local PBS Station and the PBS NewsHour nightly broadcasts.

According to a release, the story presents a citizen science project where individuals count all the species of birds in the local area during a designated time period. Cape Tech students Kimberly Diaz, junior, and Aidan Myers, junior, produced the film with instruction provided by Christopher Jones, Communication Arts Technology teacher. As the STEM SRL Connected Educator, Jones develops the students skills and works to advance the future of journalism and public media.

SRL lesson plans, assignment prompts and instruction tools facilitate project-based learning that builds critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills. PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs is building the next generation of informed media creators and consumers.
