COURT HOUSE – The Museum of Cape May County, in conjunction with the Cape May County Civil War Roundtable, will host a lecture Oct. 19 that will bring to life one of the Civil War’s most colorful characters, Rose O’Neal Greenhow.
Greenhow, also known as Wild Rose, was a celebrated and successful Confederate spy. As a Washington D.C. socialite and hostess, she befriended many, including military officials, politicians and presidents thereby enabling her to pass coded messages about Union troop movements. Confederate President Jefferson Davis credited Greenhow with helping the South’s victories at the First Battle of Bull Run and Manassas.
Portrayed by living historian, educator and re-enactor, Miss Eddy O’Malley, this lecture will give glimpse into the life of one of the Civil War’s most notorious spies as well as give a better understanding of military intelligence.
This lecture is free and open to the public. It will begin at 7 p.m. inside the Military Room of The Museum’s historic Smith Barn.
