Cape May Beaches Named Second Best in Nation, Ninth in World

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY — TripAdvisor has named this city’s beaches as the ninth best in the world and second best in the nation.
The 2011 Traveler’s Choice Best Beach Award notes: “Yes, Cape May is, technically, on the Jersey Shore. But it’s the antithesis of the Jersey Shore you’ll see on TV—instead of nightclubs and tanning parlors, you’ll find Victorian mansions and a famous lighthouse.”
Cape May is listed in between eighth place Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with its “25 miles of white sand, swaying coconut trees and crystal clear water,” and tenth place Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, “where the surf is always up.”
The number one beach in the world according to TripAdvisor is Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Cape May ranked second in the Travelers’ Choice Beaches Award-winning U.S. Beach Destinations. That placed Cape May in between Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Panama City Beach, Fla.
According to a press release from the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel site.
Award winners were determined based on the most highly rated beach destinations by travelers in TripAdvisor reviews. Unlike any other honors, TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice winners are based on millions of real and unbiased reviews and opinions from travelers around the world, according to the chamber.
In a statement, Chamber President John Cooke said he wanted to make sure Trip Advisor was not influenced by their recent advertisement purchase on Trip Advisor website.
Trip Advisor responded “winning destinations were identified based on traveler ratings for the destinations, including the category of beach and sun that travelers can rate on a scale from 1-5. Travelers submit these ratings in the hotel review form.”
The awards were based on reviews from 2010. Trip Advisor uses an algorithm to measure the highest rated beach destinations according to traveler ratings, highest average rating and volume of ratings overall were taken into account.
