The Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2020 Hometown Heroes: Petty Officer Jason M. Ruffenach, HS2 Caleigh Vazquez and La Mer Beachfront Inn.

The Hometown Hero Award honors those who exemplify courage, kindness, and unselfish character, which contributes significantly to the betterment of Cape May County. It is presented to a community member or organization that goes above the call of duty to embrace the Coast Guard as part of the community and/or a Coast Guard member or a member of their family, whose actions help to connect the Cape May County community and the United States Coast Guard.

Jason Ruffenach has made this community his home. An instructor at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, Ruffenach educates recruits about the history and bond between Cape May and the Coast Guard. He champions Cape May as the Coast Guard’s hometown by explaining its distinction and informing recruits of available off-base support. In addition to volunteering at local charities, Ruffenach, who is also a licensed realtor, has helped many military members and their families become part of the Coast Guard Community.

Caleigh Vazquez demonstrated kindness and unselfish character by organizing a bike-building event, at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, to distribute bikes to foster children in Cape May County. She put together a team of volunteers who unpackaged, assembled and delivered donated bikes to children over the holiday season.

Vazquez's efforts brought smiles and joy to many foster children in the area.

La Mer Beachfront Inn, an iconic Cape May resort, supports the Coast Guard Community by offering a variety of experiences for Coast Guard members and their families. La Mer Beachfront Inn truly embraces Coast Guard members living and working in Cape May County or visiting Coast Guard Training Center Cape May.

Petty Officer Jason M. Ruffenach, HS2 Caleigh Vazquez, and La Mer Beachfront Inn will be recognized at the Southern New Jersey Coast Guard Ball April 25, at the Wildwoods Convention Center.
