COURT HOUSE - A sixth-grade student had the last word in the Middle Township Middle School’s seventh annual spelling bee at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center, and set the stage for the next stop on the road to what could be a national championship.

According to a release, Olivia Orton won the title in the 30th round by correctly spelling “boiling,” defeating last year’s winner, Kiara Mollenkopf, who was trying for a repeat.

Third place went to Jeffrey Tzorfas.

Orton will go to the next level of competition March 21 at the Petway Elementary School in Vineland.

The winner there advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in the Washington area this spring.

Coordinator for the local event was supervisor Constance Chabok who commended the students who competed.

“The contestants worked diligently to prepare for the bee,” she stated. “It was an exciting and educational event to be held at the Performing Arts Center.”
