CAPE MAY — Board members of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May are predicting a good summer season for the city’s business sector despite high gasoline prices and a downturn in the national economy.
At a press conference Monday, called to announce chamber dues would be cut in half to encourage more membership, Chamber President Robert Steenrod said signs were positive for a healthy summer season.
“I think the gas prices will help us,” he said. “We still target a 300-mile radius, an eight-hour ride, one gas tank away.”

CAPE MAY — This city needs families with children as residents and an ordinance passed by city council March 18 may help the situation.
Council approved an ordinance outlining the city’s regulations for developers to provide one affordable housing unit for every five residential units they construct and one unit for every 16 jobs produced by building a commercial structure.
All municipalities in the state are required to file a plan with the Council on Affordable Housing.

Rising taxes, tolls, fuel costs, medical insurance, lack of jobs, property values and rents skyrocketing; pretty soon we will all be on welfare or some kind of social services.

Great, build affordable housing. Then make a bunch of new city positions with excellent pay and taxpayer paid full medical coverage for the family so they will be able to make the payments. Without jobs, who cares if the housing is affordable?....unless you are expecting the county social services welfare department to fill them for you.

Dubious Data Skews Second Historic Homes Survey

Cape May is filled with historic homes, getting details of them seems difficult for the HPC. Photo by Al Campbell
CAPE MAY — How difficult is it to count, write a description and photograph each historic home here? Apparently it is next to impossible.
The city’s Historic Preservation Commission has ordered historic home surveys from two firms during the past four years and both have been flawed and inaccurate.
At issue, should the city pay for the latest survey?

Publishing the name of only one party who is alleged to have been involved in an incident like this before an investigation is completed, charges are preferred and the individual's guilt or innocence is determined is absolutely reprehensible and unjust. To do so under the pretense of "protecting the victim" presumes innocence on the part of the accuser as well as guilt on the part of the accused. The real victims in something like this are the wives, children and loved ones of the people involved. Saying you think, because this individual "got right in [your] face (spit and everything)" makes you "swear that [he] wanted to give you a hicky(sic) or something" tells more than you probably wanted to convey. Is there the slightest possibility that you were getting chewed out for something you might have done wrong? I'm reading this thread and I see your comments and they make me want to punch you in the mouth, but then you'd lose half of your income-earning capability. You "knew that guy was a ***" Give me a break. Unfortunately, you are breathing air that the rest of us may one day need. Do you honestly think his kids and wife won't have a different opinion as to his sexual orientation? You're an idiot.
As to whether something happened or not, the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings will hopefully resolve this. I have known the military justice system to be fair at times and unfair at others. Military justice, like military intelligence, is an oxymoron except with more emphasis on the moron part. That's where the person I am responding to fits in. Regardless, the MP's, SGS, Command Group, and the PAO at Cape May ought to be investigated regarding the premature release of only one party's name. Unfortunately, they will likely investigate themselves and will, of course, find nothing wrong or at least not be able to pinpoint the person responsible. We serve and fight to defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic, including those who violate the individual rights of any citizen. It seems to me that someone in that command has an agenda and needs to be held accountable -- unless, of course, in the interest of fairness, they released a similar story for print in Manrum's hometown news to humiliate his family as well. It's an equal opportunity world, so why not? Find the person who signed that release and see if they were tied to the Cape May article and you've got your troublemaker.
As for no other CC ever getting so close to you before, perhaps you should brush your teeth.
This comment was written in response to the idiot who wrote "I knew that guy was a *** the first time I saw him...I was in line one time and he got right in my face (spit and everything) A CC has never gotten so close before....I swear that *** wanted to give me a hicky or something..He got what he deserved..."

"The Coast Guard must have very reliable evidence if they have decided to charge PO Medina wth such serious charges. The military does not file charges based on '"hear say" . Like the saying "the worse things can happen in the best of families". So people wake up and and smell the coffee, please!"
Obviously you have not served in the Military. You can in fact be charged on hear say in the Military! Regular courts are not the same as Military Justice. You are guilty until proven innocent in the Military essentially. It's his word against the accuser.
A civilian can call a Command & accuse one of the personnel & the Command will begin proceedings to investigate that Military member. That member may be held for the duration of the investigation & throughout the trial regardless.

CC's are held to a much higher standard (as they should be) then the rest of the CG enlisted force. Anyone that's worked the regiment knows it. He didn't just get there, nor was he a new hat. Alcohol or not - he should've never allowed himself to be put into that position.

We obviously have people on one side and some on the other. As I stated earlier, it’s hard to believe it happened when it involves a friend. In the end the system will allow evidence to be introduced and if he is innocent that also will come to pass. If he is not then lets pray that his family is well and recovers from this ordeal. Not knowing the facts but I’m guessing that maybe alcohol had a role in this. Not excusing his actions (assuming he did it) but trying to understand why it happened.

Obviously he doesn't know the rules and regulations! If he did he would be about to go to court martial for Sexual Assault and Rape! *** I hope they nail his *** to the wall, and then his *** can get nailed all the time and he won't have to force anyone to do it.

I have something to say to the ignorant person who said that I live in such a nice world, did you know that PO Medina failed a lie detector test and that the accuser passed his? What do you have to say about that? If you are so bitter about the american justice and military system you should move to Cuba or any other communist country to see how good they have it there...

i dont believe in what the people are saying I Know this man and his family for a long time I was a friend of his wife and i take care of his son in a child care and i believe he is inocent, he is not that type of person please don't believe in everything you heard before look for real evidence this man has a wife and three kids they don't deserve this, why you guys release his name and don;t release the name of the person that is making the accusations, is not fear saying one name and put the other everywhere without thinking that he has a family behind him.His kids are very dissoriented with all of this crappp.

You said "The Coast Guard must have very reliable evidence if they have decided to charge PO Medina wth such serious charges. The military does not file charges based on '"hear say" ."
I say "HA!" On what planet are you living in? You must not have a clue about how things really work. If the general public knew about half of the hair brain choices the coast guard makes they would try to dismantle it. They charge people on hear say all the time! If anything did happen I think it was consensual and then they guy had second thoughts. There actually ARE people who would destroy a family or persons life to cover their own ass. I am glad you live in such a nice world where nobody ever tries to do somebody wrong though. I wish I could find it. Here on earth we have a country named america where people are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Ever since the days of the OJ simpson trial we have let the press decide our big court cases for us. Wake up people.

There is a reason why the name and sex of the alleged victim have not been revealed, I believe that the person that revealed that information had no authority to do so and should be held accountable for giving out confidential information. Also, all of these people that defend the accused are either in denial of really stupid, I don't believe for one second that this young man woke up one day and decided to ruin this other persons life "just because" or to get back at PO Medina for some accusations he made against someone else, that just does't make any sense. The Coast Guard must have very reliable evidence if they have decided to charge PO Medina wth such serious charges. The military does not file charges based on '"hear say" . Like the saying "the worse things can happen in the best of families". So people wake up and and smell the coffee, please!

I've Kown PO Medina for six years and this is not the type of person that he is, this is really an injustice, lets remember the case about 4 years ago of a BMC that faced the same or similar charges, if I remember correctly his name was not reveal until the final outcome...why is that? One thing for sure when I join the USCG I heard a lot of rumors in all the armed forces about discrimination and racism, I said to Myself "not my Coast Guard'' until I met several people including the person in charge of Public affairs in That particular training center, coincidence?? PO Medina is a dedicated father and a family man, his life is his kids, wife and family and Coast Guard, i have never met a person so dedicated to an organization than Wilson, i do not think that i can put the persons that feels the same way I do in that training center's barracks, they are just too many. No matter whats the outcome of this is, Wilson is my friend, and I always be grateful to him and his family for their friendship and help......Wilson my prayers for you and your family

Lets not say he is guilty UNTIL HE HAS HAD HIS DAY IN COURT!!!! this is AMERICA! If you want Guilty until proven innocent go to the Soviet Union! Oh wait that system FAILED!
I am sorry that you got abused. I was abused sexually by a trusted family member so I understand how you can have strong feelings about this matter but did they have to release his name? This was a male and it was no recruit, it was a working member of the Coast Guard named MANRUM. If he is found guilty then let him burn but even the accused have rights in this country. Allow me to turn the tables on you. What if you were accused of something serious that you DIDNT DO? And due to the nature of the crime your good name is STAINED FOREVER? How would THAT make you feel? huh? This will never go away, even if he is proven not guilty. So the press release is INDEED AN INJUSTICE!!!!

Im shoked to hear this....Ive known Wilson for over15 years. He is an excellent human being, serious, respectful and very dedicated to his wife and kids. His job in the Coast Guard has been his life. He was a police officer in Puerto Rico before he joined the Coast Guard. But his decision to become a member of the USCG was his goal and dream.
He has dedicated all these years to the service, not because he hasnt anything else to do, but because he loves his work. Before judging, investigate who is making the accusations, and who is in back of all this crap. For sure, the truth will be found.
Wilson, we will always confide in you. Be strong and have faith......
