they werent lifting materials. The job didnt even start yet, the lift was being put on the barge. Which wasnt tied off

Actually I think there is usually an exception to the fall arrest system when working over water. But another problem evident here is that lifting materials with an aerial lift is prohibited. Reference ANSI/SIA A92.5-7.11.11 "The aerial platform shall not be used as a crane"

Since the manlift went into the water , perhaps wearing not wearing a harness saved his life.

to clarify Mr G.'s comment. This machine does have the connectors for the use of the harness and lanyard. It is not the machine manufacturer who provides the harness, but the user. Either way, you have to wear fall protection.

Hope you get well Anthony, from all the guys at Erma FD.

As a licensed crane operator, it is clear in the photo that the piece of equipment which fell into the water is not a crane, rather, it is a self propelled manlift. It is also evident that there is no lanyard or harness in the basket that would have prevented the operator from being tossed out of the basket. This is a requirement of the machine manufacturer.

i disagree that the owner has caused problems to the community. If anything its the owners son that is a scourge on the avalon community...!

Sat, 04/26/2008 - 2:35pm

I recognize that house in the picture. I am not surprised that it caused difficulty to the community at large. The owner has been causing such difficulty for as long as this long - time resident of Avalon can remember! Farewell!
