Dan Lockwood reads a prepard concession statement Nov. 13 at the main branch Cape May County Library with family and political supporters at his side.

COURT HOUSE — Protected from heavy rains by the column-supported roof at the entrance of Cape May County’s main library branch here, Daniel Lockwood conceded victory to Mayor F. Nathan Doughty and announced he would not challenge the results of last week’s election for Middle Township Committee.

With all the votes counted — including Election Day, emergency, absentee and provisional ballots — Doughty defeated Lockwood by 86 votes, 4,105 to 4,019.

On Thursday, Nov. 13 with family members and Republican colleagues by his side, Lockwood read a prepared statement.

I voted for Lockwood and i'm disappointed to see him not on the Committee. We need change in Middle Township! Last night on the drive home I heard via radio Doughty's speech on what he wants to improve...his number one was recreation. Give me a break! Overpaid and under worked. If anyone with sense read the past 2008 minutes of the MT meetings, you will see Lockwood is in it for the good of MT. I hope he runs next year.

Fri, 11/14/2008 - 11:51am

How embarassing???? The only thing embarassing is the committee's recent management of the township. Enough with the taxes and no results. Next year is going to be a real tough year for the members of the committee because they know that the time has come.

Fri, 11/14/2008 - 9:39am

Character would be accepting the loss! Not all the excuses about losing. The county has spoken...accept it!!! Republicans, next time...go with a surer candidate. We don't need 5 committee seats...just one good candidate. Not "walking on air" anymore, now that all the votes are in? How embarrassing!!!

Fri, 11/14/2008 - 8:31am

Lockwood has character, heart, soul, and conscience, isn't in anybody's pocket and doesn't have anyone in his. What a refreshing change he will make the year that he is finally elected. Thank you, Dan, for a class run -- something Middle Township residents deserve and yearn to see again soon.

Lockwood Leans Toward No Challenge of Middle Election

election | 1 week 3 hours ago | Comments 1

By Joe Hart

COURT HOUSE — Following an extremely close race for Middle Township Committee, Republican challenger Daniel Lockwood appears to have decided against challenging the municipal election.

"After carefully reviewing all of the issues pertaining to the election results and the process of challenging them, Republican candidate Dan Lockwood is leaning toward forgoing a recount or formal contest," according to a release.

Lockwood lost to incumbent Mayor F. Nathan Doughty by a mere 86-vote margin.

Too bad, with machine broken in several locations and lots of provisional ballots incorrect, it would probably have ended closer than that or Dan would have won. Hope he will run again next year.

Any good lawyer will tell you it is prudent to accept your right to remain silent and seek counsel. That is not obstruction of justice. It is prudent.

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 2:34pm

You're mad because the Mayor didn't go to a little kid's football game when there's bigger problems at hand??? Ask someone on Indian Trail about how THEY feel about the Mayor and his standing lunch appointment. Ask the people that are nearly ejected from zoning board meetings for expressing their displeasure with the current administration. You're mad about a football game... pfft...

Middle Twp Republicans - you wanna unseat DeLanzo... start NOW. Better Yet... you should have already started. Start working on Barry while you're at it. Chance favors the prepared mind.

Sun, 11/09/2008 - 6:25pm

Hey Mr. Mayor... You say you suport youth sports, yet I didn't see you at one Middle Twp. Junior Panther Football Game. All three teams played this weeked, yet you were not present at one game. I guess it's okay to get your picture take with the kids, but not okay to come out and lend your support to the kidsq. Thanks for nothing Mr. Mayor. Go Junior Panthers!

Sun, 11/09/2008 - 5:54pm

The money being spent to defend the Mayor from law suits could have built the hockey rink or a state of the art computer lab for the high school. Middle cannot afford Nate Doughty. Our children need better.

Sun, 11/09/2008 - 9:44am

Yes, Nate, the people have spoken and you came closer to losing than any incumbent ever has....Wake up and smell the coffee, most of the township is dissatisfied with you! Could it be that you have just been told that if your classmates hadn't voted for you, you would be out?? It is time to move forward and that young upstart Lockwood just showed you that you dont know what forward is....maybe its time for you to address views of the 4000+ people who voted against you.....Oh and DeLonzo for Mayor???That has to be someone with Memory loss... Steven Doyle left her bar, was killed a mile away, and instead of the police interviewing the bartender who served him immediately, she put him on ice and told him what to say in the interview, and 5 hours later let the police interview him...yeah, we have a great leadership team in Middle.

Keep at it Dan, it isn't easy getting the old cronies to change but the rest of us welcome it.

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 8:07pm

Chuck for Middle Township Committee!!!!

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 9:43am

I wonder if the public really knows that Nate and Steve do not even talk to Sue DeLanzo. Apparently they are intimidated by someone, who actually works for a living. Keep on electing Democrats New Jersey. We are one of the most corrupt States in the Country, and have the highest taxes, insurance rates, unemployment, Etc. You have no one to blame but yourselves. Charles Barkley said it best; " Poor people keep voting for Democrats, and are still poor. " The people of Middle Township keep falling for the same old story, without actually looking at the facts. The blatant corruption in Middle will someday come to a head. Millions of $ have been wasted by the idiots in Twp hall, and by administrators and department heads in Middle, and no one seems to care, until they get their tax bill. Then they complain and get fed BS by Nate, Jim and their crew and just go back to their holes, until next November.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 6:53pm

SUSAN DELANZO FOR MAYOR!!!!!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 6:52pm

Well, we can all thank the Herald for the results of this election.

If 20% of the provisional ballots were rejected, how many of the absentee ballots should have been rejected.

FOUL!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 5:28pm

Thats great ,How about pushing to high a TRAFFIC LIGHT AT FULLING MILL AND 47 and CREATION OF SOME MORE LIQURE LIC. And get rid of the blite in Rio Grande(train Cars). Other wise Thank You NATE....

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 3:36pm

It never fails. When a Democrat is challenged or loses an election by a close margin, out come the absentee ballots and "provisional" ballots. Then, miraculously, the Democrat wins. This "election" is only going to prolong the inevitable, which is Nate Doughty and his master, Jim Alexis, being investigated for corruption. Middle Township is starting to resemble Atlantic City, or Camden.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 2:55pm

Nate The Great!!!!!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 1:06pm

A sad day for the taxpayers and all thinking people in Middle - *** - Alexis and Pickering can go on selling our future to Albrecht and Heun.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 12:59pm

Not a resounding win, and core Dems (all five of them) should realize that their stranglehold on Middle no longer exists. Half the electorate is fed up with cronyism and the spoils system, and the other half is wondering if maybe they should begin examing things a bit closer, too. Kudos to Dan Lockwood for running an honest and energetic campaign -- and almost winning on the issues !

Doughty Leads by 59 Votes in Middle Race

COURT HOUSE — After the Cape May County Election Board counted a record number of absentee ballots through the night of Nov. 4 and into the day of Nov. 5, the tight race for Middle Township Committee has swung back to incumbent Democrat Mayor F. Nathan Doughty.

Following the Election Day returns, Republican challenger Daniel D. Lockwood was winning by the slim margin of eight votes — 3,686 to 3,678. With the absentee votes tallied, however, Doughty has climbed back into a 59-vote lead of 4,057 to 3,998.

I'm a dem, and a college student that voted for Lockwood... he came by my house on Sunday campaigning and was a really nice guy. I hope he wins.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 11:26am

Are you kiddin', hons? Right now I'm just humming a little tune, and smiing at the thought that whether or not the core Dems (all five of them) get the message, half the town is now unafraid to speak up and the other half is wondering whether they should start taking a closer look at things. How characteristic that you'd view a "W" as so critical -- and that you'd assume a "W" is yours before any official announcement. Whatever the final tally, Dan Lockwood has scored a victory beyond anything your blinders permit you to see. Boys, you'll hear me singing the day the persons who have raided the Township trust and treasury see justice. And, like Barack Obama, I have faith that day will come. xo, the fat lady with slim tolerance for corruption

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 8:35pm

A message has been sent, But is's over until next year! Game, Set, Match. The fat lady is singing on Mechanic street.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 1:52pm

Dan is a player and is here to stay,in my opinion. Nate is by far the toughest nut to crack - I think the word of him personally but did no vote for him because a) this Indian Trail mess is not going away and WILL lead to taxpayer funded litigation and b) his opponents have him on the ropes with this "Sorry, can't vote - can't comment" recusal corner they have successfully boxed him into.

Last election Steve Barry had to raise 80 FREAKIN' GRAND to run for committee. How deep will his pockets be this time around? I think Dan would find him much easier to beat than Nate. (As of this writing, Nate was ahead on absentee ballots.)

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 1:05pm

wow, this just goes to show the dems have a better get-out-the-vote...they couldn't beat lockwood without making sure every college kid, snowbird and shut-in voted by absentee...lockwood almost won, despite basically zero help from the republican part of middle twp, which should have been doing its own absentee push....the gop was as shocked as lockwood that he almost won

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 10:45am

I VOTED FOR DAN LOCKWOOD I'M TIRED OF HAVING A MAYOR WHO IS LOOKING OUT FOR HIS FRIENDS AND NOT THE TOWNSHIP. I'M TIRED OF THE WASTED MONEY AND THE HIGH TAXES NATE MAKES PROMISSES TO YOUR FACE TO MAKE YOU HAPPY THEN DOES THE EXACT OPPOSITE I HOPE WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THAT DAN IS THE WINNER AND I ALSO WOULD SUPPORT A REVOTE IN THOSE DISTRICTS WHERE THE MACHINES BROKE DOWN

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 9:41am

Nate and his *** never win fair and square - why is the township's lawyer arguing for him? are we paying for his personal attorney - who is also the head of the Dem Party? We all know who really runs the township - Alexis. Nate is just a front man.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 8:25am

Nate won fair and square...accept it, already!

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 1:15am

Hmmmm, the Herald did not report on this topic when Dan was the leader in the vote count - even when an 8 vote separation would have been a great story.

How different our community would be if the bias reflected in this journalistic decision didn't exist.

I'm a little concerned about the down voting machines, especially the one that was fixed at the site. Perhaps all of the votes from those two machines should be disqualified.

The Republicans on every level need to step up to the plate and support Dan in challenging this election in every way possible.

Every effort should be made to be certain that every vote was legitimate. Perhaps the residents of Middle should challenge the vote on their own behalf. It is time for a change.

(Ed. Note: The Herald did not report on Lockwood's eight-vote lead because preliminary absentee numbers were already in on election night indicating that the lead had changed. Reporting on the early returns was what led to a local television station calling the race for Lockwood prematurely. Instead, the Herald waited for all the absentee ballots to be counted before posting a story. The Herald did, however, post the Election Day numbers that evening taken directly from the county Clerk's office, which showed Lockwood's lead of eight votes. Thanks for reading and showing interest in the Herald's stories.)

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:53pm

Despite the huge number and "size" of Doughty’s electioneering signs, Dan Lockwood clearly won the election by people who actually went to the polling places to vote. So, would not logic have it that a similar cross section of voters via absentee ballots would cast similar votes? Okay, maybe not always, but, unless the votes were, let’s say orchestrated in one direction or another it should follow suit. So, kinda makes me wonder why all of a sudden we see a major swing in numbers. I hope the Republicans eye every vote with the scrutiny and due diligence it deserves. Talk about change, we want one in Middle. And, let’s put out cards on the table here, if Doughty was not under Obama’s name on the ballot it is my opinion Lockwood would have beaten Doughty significantly. We are sick of Good ol’ Boy, dirty back room politics. These absentee ballots need significant scrutiny.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:02pm

Dan is the Future for the republican party. Great job! He has proven you don't need to use dirty tricks just run on the issues !

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 9:15pm

Looks like Nate pulled this one out. I think it's all but over.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 5:44pm

We are praying hard in Middle for Dan. But we are thrilled with what already is a substantial victory by Dan over "politics as usual" in our town. There is something very poignant about the fact that DESPITE all of Nate's expensive mailers, his pancake-breakfast-for-the-whole-town (in the expensive dining wing of a restaurant owned by another Committee member, *** his larger-than-life signs that blew down with the first strong winds, the tens of thousands of small signs placed in a manner that distracted and endangered drivers throughout the township, and his over-the-top campaign trucks and banner planes that crisscrossed the township on election day, in the end a huge number of people simply loved and trusted Lockwood. Whatever happens now, may we all go forward with a little more sincerity and humility and caring -- qualities that Dan showed throughout his beautiful campaign.

Best wishes and may God be with Mike Beck and Kevin lare as they try and make Lower Township a better place for us all.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 8:12am

To the 4:13 Spouter. The city gets a copy of the Rescue Squads audit every year, so they know how much money is coming in and going out. The city got rid of those employees years ago because it cost too much, but you want to bring them back at this time? Why don't you ask some of our neighboring city's how much revenue is being made, most likely under civil service not even the salaries. As to someone on council, I heard he doesn't even vote on Rescue Squad matters. After reading your spout I can see that you are one of those people that want to tear down all of our emergency services, police, fire and rescue. Their all busy helping people, leave them alone so that one day they may help you.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 8:49pm

I think the guy who runs the Middle township recreation department will run next year.Chuck McDonnell for township committee!

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 4:13pm

For the commenter from Thursday 11/06 at 6:56 AM if you feel that way maybe the Township should take over the Rescue Squad so maybe some revenue can be made. Kevin *** has a scam going with making money on transports to doctors appointments and hospital not in this area while we the township residents are left with no one to help in an emergency. Maybe Beck and Lare can look into this, or does a certain someone on council not want their bubble burst?

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 12:47pm

IF the people of Lower Twp. are smart, Douglass is a lame duck councilman. He is so far in left field with the new allignment on Council that he will be even more ineffective as he already has. He's already destoyed the Republican Org. hopefully he won't have time OR be given the opportunity to screw the Twp up anymore.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 9:11am

The people of Lower Township have just proven that they don't have trust and confidence in Bob Nolan. They already gave Walt Craig the hook in June. Better days are ahead, wait and see.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 8:32am

"Susan Delanzo for Middle"

Got my vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally, a real challenger!

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 6:56am

It's too bad Beck and Lare are good Christians and will turn the other cheek with those members of the LT department who tried to put fear in the people and claim they are doomed, because they fear their department will be downsized through attrition. The online spout off and comments here are a striking testiment to how these people dislike and make fun of the very people they supposedly serve. To call them uneducated retards, low lifes, druggies and numerous other insults; just shows how much hard work Beck and Lare have ahead of them in straightening out or getting rid of any public employee who cares so little for the very people who provide them with their paychecks. Lower Twp. needs a lot of work in stopping this divisiveness and lack of respect. Any department that thinks they operate independent of the rest of the township should be brought back in under township control immediately. All departments are necessary and none are superior or inferior to another for the services they provide.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:06pm

Susan Delanzo for Mayor of Middle.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 8:39pm

Unbelievable! Lower Township is officially DOOMED, DOOMED, DOOMED! Along with the rest of this country. All because of the uneducated retards that voted for Beck, Lare & Obamma! I question if half of the people who voted were acually allowed to vote. Well I guess now there won't be cops around to patroll the Villas park so Becks grandkids won't get caught next time. Way to go Lower!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 7:29pm

For all of you who think LT is doomed....does that mean I can buy your house cheap??

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 7:27pm

Here is my observation folks: count how many times the word "doomed" is used in the preceeding comments. It is either all the same person OR they all went to the same school, read the same books, and failed the same vocabulary test.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 6:08pm

I do not think LT will be moving forward with Beck and Lare.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 5:06pm

Great, now we will have less police to protect us from the villas low lifes.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 4:33pm

Start counting those chickens!!!! The absentee ballots have been counted and BECK & LARE are the declared elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The residents have won a great victory. The only ones that are doomed are those that built up their own little "kingdoms" within the township. Soon all departments will be working together for the benefit of the residents and the future of the township. The people will have a greater voice in the future of their township. The community and the government will come together and work toward the same goal of a better Lower Township.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 4:25pm

Whoa....I just saw Glenn Douglass walking his dog down the street...he's waving and thanking people for making him the "people's choice", I think he thinks he won! HAHAHAHAHA

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 4:12pm

The eggs have hatched and Lare is the winner. Congratulations to Mike & Kevin.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 3:35pm

Mike Beck and Kevin Lare are the official Mayor Elect and Deputy Mayor Elect of Lower Township. The absentee ballots have been counted and they are the declared winners. There were only about 50 provisional ballots to be finalized on Friday, but those numbers cannot change the outcome.

Now Lower Twp. can move forward. Congratulations to Mayor Elect Beck and Deputy Mayor Elect Lare.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 3:18pm

To the 11/05/08, 10:32 person- Do you even know who the Mayor of LT is. It is NOT Douglass. I guess your another Beck supporter. Do not count Lare a winner until all the absentee ballots are counted.Lt people think they are blessed with Beck, I do believe it is doomed!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 2:08pm

The race is not over untill all the provissional and absentee ballots are counted up. So for all you who keep congratulating Kevin Lare, Don't count your chickens before they hatch! Nolan still has a good shot..

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 2:01pm

Why the big red star next to McCain? Did Obama not clearly wim? (These are election results for Cape May County -Herald Staff)

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 1:35pm

Congratulations to Beck/ Lare. I think they willl do a great job!
Congrats and thank you to everyone who voted for Barack...there could not have been a better outcome!!!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 1:26pm

Every single absentee ballot needs to be scrutinized for veracity and origination much in the same way the 3 to 5 petition was examined.

Stand up for yourself Middle. The time for change is now. Let whoever wins, win fairly.

SCRUTINIZE! SCRUTINIZE!! SCRUTINIZE!!!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 1:09pm

Come January watch out for M@M to be back in charge of Lower Township. Thats Manager Mcpherson who manages from an office and lawyer Monzo that never saw an issue he did not mind litigating at our expense. Grab hold of your wallet because the lawsuits will start again.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 11:19am

Only Cape May would vote for losers, McCain/Palin. Thank heavens I do not live there anymore.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:32am

Most of the people in Lower Township are smart and smart enough to know when someone wants to be mayor because they love this township and only want the best for it.The Beck/Lare ticket is the best thing to happen for us in four years...as for the former mayor Douglass, good riddance to bad rubish.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:31am

Lockwood had been ahead of incumbent Doughty by 18 votes when voting machine results were counted after 9 p.m. However, Doughty received 350 votes in absentee ballots to Lockwood's 282, according to figures from the Cape May County Clerk's Office. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE SAVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 9:19am

Congrats Mike and Kevin. Out with the old, in with pro-taxpayers.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 8:52am

to the people voted for BECK hope you are ready for the crime rate to go up even more, you voted for the only candidate that is going to eliminate police, you have to be all idiots.. So now this long journey begins. The villas had potential to be a beautiful place, but now it will end up just like Camden... houses wont sell, scumbags will continue to move in and soon the criminals will run this town, unfortunately they will overcome the LTPD because MR> BECK does not want to rehire men... All you people that voted for him are idiots, your little cozy town is DOOMED

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 7:52am

Though we are praying hard in Middle for Dan, it won't be surprising if Nate's people found some legal (but, at heart, unfair) procedure for stuffing the absentees -- like helping them be filled out by people who never would have voted otherwise. There were at least 600 absentees - an unheard of % of the electorate. Putting that aside, there is something very poignant about the fact that despite all of Nate's expensive mailers, his pancake-breakfast-for-the-whole-town (in a restaurant owned by another Committee member, operating without site plan approval, and without paying taxes on, an expensive dining wing), his larger-than-life signs that cost more than a fence around the MLK Center playground would've, the tens of thousands of small signs placed in ways that distracted and endangered drivers throughout the township, and his over-the-top campaign trucks and banner planes that crisscrossed the township on election day, in the end a huge number of people simply loved and trusted Lockwood. Whatever happens now, may we all go forward with a little more sincerity and humility and caring -- qualities that Dan showed throughout his beautiful campaign.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 7:40am

Thank god Craig and now Nolan got the boot. The residents of lower are sick and tired of them running the town into the ground. Beck/Lare will finally straighten our budget and the give away's to employees that don't deserve it.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 7:19am

Congratulations to Beck/Lare! This is a sign of good things to come

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 6:59am

Lower elects the borther-screwer Mike Beck to ruin the Township? Good Job people who voted for him. I can't wait until the emergency services in the township suffer from such a poor decision. God help the LTPD now.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 6:56am

Congratulations to Mike Beck and Kevin Lare on a well deserved victory!! Now the opinions and needs of the people of Lower Township will finally be heard and met. Well done gentlemen!

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 6:22am

What a win for the people of Lower Township. Finally they have a Mayor and Council member at large for the people. Together the people can take back their township from those that have divided it and truly make it a great place to live. This win is historical. The people chose the right representatives for them over the policital parties. I can't wait for the first township meeting in January.
Congratulations Mike Beck, Kevin Lare and to all the township residents who helped their campaign. Congratulations to all the voters who showed their confidence in the "We The People" team by giving them your vote. Lower residents truly are on their way to "taking back our community, one citizen at a time."

It is interesting that the new Councilman in Stone Harbor went around telling anyone who would listen that he would now be Mayor. Look at the votes. He came in last. Have the voters now begun to understand his methods and actions? Watch him. He'll try to run the Council because he thinks he's perfect.
