WILDWOOD CREST - The Greater Wildwood 20th annual Christmas in July Boat Parade ended with an unplanned pyrotechnic display. The aftermath was still burning July 20, and a Forest Fire Service helicopter ferried water in a huge bucket over the isolated island fire about noon in an attempt to extinguish the smoky blaze.
The smoke formed a thick hazy blanket across the marshes, and could be smelled and seen northward to Court House on the east side of Garden State Parkway.

So much to do. Start with On Deck

My neighbor has a theory that once Fourth of July fireworks are over, it’s barely a minute before Labor Day. He’s right. All the more reason to read On Deck cover to cover and find out all the neat things you can do in Cape May County before the season’s gone.
But let me tell you, you’re going to have a hard time choosing. The later it gets, the more events pack the What’s On Deck calendar.

This is from one of the mo's. My facts are straight and I am not guessing about anything. I am and have been educated regarding incident command. Thanks for your input, perhaps , mo' #2 will learn something from your rambling.

This is to the response to the two mo's arguing about "incident command" system. The incident command is taught to all emergency responders. It is established at ALL fire calls by the first arriving officer of the fire department. Incident command is not "called for". Just because there wasn't a big fancy suv with "INCIDNET COMMAND" on the window doesn't mean that it was not there. Once again people, get your facts straight and educate yourself before making your best "educated guess" about what is happening. Here you go try starting here www.nimsonline.com/ics_training, then make your comments. As far as DON CABRERA is concerned he should be thankful that he was not removed from that scene with his own silver braclets. Hopefully after the investigation is completed he will get his own pair in the end. Stupid moves can kill people.

Whether they were called or not, stone harbors boat was used and WE THANK THEM!!
and WE THANK ALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS that were there

First of all it's not called scene command it's called incident command....... and I know they were not called.
Tue, 07/22/2008 - 1:00pm
Oh My God !!! The LTTA has not commented on this issue yet!! That's surprising considering there was Lower Police, Lower Rescue, Lower Fire Bureau etc etc on scene....... Maybe because the LTTA all had boats in the Parade and don't want to "Make Waves".... Can't wait to see their reply on this......We all are waiting......

It was the Crest who put the fireworks on. They also put them on for Seafarer's also. I would like to know if they actually had permits and permission to put these on. If they did you would think that Lower would have been standing by at the scene in case something caught on fire. Wildwood's Fire Dept. is always at the Friday nights fireworks. I live in the Crest and I would like answers. Do we have to pay for this since it was our fault? This isn't the first time the Crest did fireworks and a fire started maybe you shoukd have learned from past experiences. Someone needs to look into the rec department, Mr. Cabrera and the Mayor. We can't do whatever we please, nor should any of you.

Thank you to all the firefighters who spent long hours making sure that Shawcrest and the marina was safe.
Great job!
You're the Best!!!!

stone harbor and the other companys that were there were requested by the scene command.
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 10:08pm
Yeah, Stone Harbor was there but who requested them???

to the 7:17 PM Poster- Read careful and see if you can put together two seperate thoughts....
1st- from the post of 3:24 -"why would lower not make sure the crest had everything in order before the show ? "
now thought number 2...from the post of 4:44 PM "IF the Crest didn't go to Lower to have the proper permitting completed fornthe Fireworks...how in the world would you expect Lower to know anything about it, let alone
making sure evrything was in order"....
The response had nothing to do with preventing the fire...it was in response to a post from someone probably as stupid as you....so lets see if you qualify....opps...you laready did!
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 7:17pm
There you have it folks from the educated people offshore. If a permit was filed the fire would not have happened. You have solved the problem. You have qualified. For what I don't know, but you qualify. You might want to get the facts straight folks.

Is this for real.....my best friends sisters boyfriends brothers girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid whos going with a girl who said.....talk about I heard it through the grapevine.
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 4:44pm
IF the Crest didn't go to Lower to have the proper permitting completed fornthe Fireworks...how in the world would you expect Lower to know anything about it, let alone
making sure evrything was in order. The people at fault here....the Fireworks Display people and the Crest Officials.
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 3:24pm
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who said wildwood crest had NO permit to shoot the fireworks off in the 1st place. So, if this being true why would the crest shoot them off on Lower Twp property and why would lower not make sure the crest had everything in order before the show ? why not have fire dept people there during the show ? or wet it all down with the fire boats before one starts with them when the grass is so dry?.
Anyway, Thank you firemen !!!! <3
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 11:49am
Too bad a few houses didn't go up too, as hot ash can be carried in the wind for a ways........... Maybe it's time to cut back on the fireworks.
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 8:46am
fyi.... lower township were not the only firefighters at that scene it took alot of help and dedication from stone harbor firefighters , the forest fire service and north wildwood, also the coastguard.
Mon, 07/21/2008 - 7:10am
I hope Wildwood Crest has to pay the cost of putting that fire out. Its a shame that they were the ones who started the fire with thier fireworks on a island that is not part of thier city than they all go to bed and leave everyone else to deal with it. My hat goes off to the ones who stayed there all hours of the night and most of thier sunday to serve and protect. Next time the fireworks should be lit off at Crest Memorial field that way thier city can burn.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 9:06pm
If Don Cabrea is the one who gave the police and firefighters a hard time when they arrived he should be fired.Anyone who acts the way he did should not be in charge anything.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 7:13pm
FYI............ This Fire was in LOWER TOWNSHIP'S AREA and Lower Township Fire Fighters were on the scene for over 12 hours.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 6:17pm
Thanks to all the Firefighters that spent most of their Sat night and Sun. making sure that nothing lit off on ShawCrest. Some people didnt understand why you guys didnt just swim out there with a hose to put it out. Which shows you how uneducated some people are. Thanks again firefighters.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 4:36pm
Why would Don Cabrera be fired? This was a boat parade event, Fireworks are what they are, they may catch three week dry plants on fire. That island has a fire almost every time a fireworks event takes place. What is it going to hurt? Nothing. You were probably one of the people enjoying the events on sunset lake free of charge weren't you? Clapping for the fireworks and enjoying maybe a cocktail. Now you want to cut heads off. The stuff on the lake was what Don Cabrera and Wildwood Crest was running. Give me a break! Know what you are saying.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 2:56pm
ohhh no not the piping plovers.... ....which brings me to my next question... why do they call them piping? are they plumbers ? do they like to clean ppipes?
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 2:41pm
Plovers are crunchy. I like them with lots of ketchup!
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 11:59am
Should Don Cabrea be fired for this episode?
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 11:18am
Beware, plovers are high in cholesterol.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 10:43am
From what I understand, the smoldering became a huge fire again at 11:00 a.m.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 10:05am
Its a shame that the city can burn an island that's probably full of piping plovers, but we cant use Champaign Island as a secluded place to relax, BBQ, etc.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 8:48am
at 9:00 AM the fire was still burning
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 8:08am
the fire is still burning
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 7:43am
I hope whoever posted the comment about the cats, burns in hell....
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 6:51am
Way too funny comments!
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 4:41am
Too bad the island wasn't infested with cats.
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 4:06am
Uninhabited? I could hear the screams of baby Piping Plovers! (...Hmmm, roasted Plover and some fava beans, washed down with a fine Chianti....where is my kayak?)
Sun, 07/20/2008 - 2:55am
At 4:00am the fire is still burning
