Utley's 'uh-oh!' could cost him millions

Features | 3 weeks 3 days ago | Comments 35

By Jim Vanore

Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley, in shouting the English language’s most notorious four-letter word over the airwaves during Philadelphia’s recent World Series victory celebration, may have cost himself several millions of dollars.
Although neither fine nor official castigations have as of this writing been levied (nor are any likely to be), it may be just becoming apparent to Utley that his bawdy bellow could cost him more than a couple of future endorsements.

Jim if you watch TV with your granddaughter then you must have seen the Viagra and Cialis commercials too. I know during the World Series games these commericals were in heavy rotation. Just curious how you would go about explaining to her what erections are and why if they last longer then 4 hours to consult your physicians? How would you describe the men that take these medications 70 year old men that wished they still had boy's bodies and can't find anything inspiring to do in their later years then prolong a bleepin erection! Why don't you write an article about the content of these commercials that are far more troubling for a 12-year old then the slip of the F bomb! Maybe because that would mean you would have to go up against the pharmaseutical companies and since you are so obsessed with endorsements this goes against your grain?

Chase Utley slip of the F bomb during the pinnacle moments of his life (he has been playing baseball since he was 8) and just won the World Series is understandable in this context. Shame on you for trying to say his stellar baseball record will not be remembered but only this one moment! You are totally wrong and 20 years from now he will stand out as one of Phillies greatest all time 2nd baseman and this incident won't even be mentioned.

Since you are retired and probably have friends that take Viagra or Cialis why don't you tell them to grow the bleep up.

Forever Utley Fan

Jim Vanore must be a Mets fan, get over it, it's the 2000's not the 50's.

Wed, 11/12/2008 - 11:19am

i think it is wrong for chase utly for saying that word to i mean people are right he shouldn't say somthing like that because of little children i mean i am a big time phillies fan and after hearing what he said i really think it is crazy

Wed, 11/12/2008 - 7:01am

get over it. everyone says that word...and if they don't yet, they will soon

get the **** over it

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 8:31pm

it is the fault of the network !!! you should have seen this coming after the allstar game !!! does the networks not beleive in " TAPE DELAY "

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:42pm

I totally agree with Jim's article. There is no place for such foul language in a public setting, particularly when hundreds of children are present. Jim's article is right on the mark! Chase's poor judgement is very likely to affect his ability to secure endorsements & unfortunately, has tarnished his reputation! (All-American boys don't use gutter language -- at least not in public!)

We all thought Chase was a class guy. Although he has apologized thru the Phillies, we still wonder what motivated him to use such poor judgement. Keep the expletives in the dugout......don't expose our kids to this kind of foul language!

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:21pm

I agree that Chase Utley was wrong to say it, but , what were those kids doing there anyway? It was a school day and if parents took their children out of school to partake in the celebration at the stadium, then they are sending an even worse message than Chase Utley!

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 10:55am

It is sad to think that some people have become so use to hearing this word that they do not care about the youth of this country emulating high character.

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 5:14pm

WHAT!! A baseball player said a bad word! What is this world coming to. Thank God Jim Vanore is not a Flyers fan! lol

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 5:13pm

After reading the article and then the comments posted it is crystal clear that society has become crass and de-sensitized. The truth is, uneducated folks and those with limited vocabulary skills resort to four letter words to express themselves. And, unless the adults correct their children by forbidding foul language to be spoken, these same adiluts better laugh when their children turn to them and "drop the F bomb". I personally hope they do it in front of alot of people. Remember, don't get embarrassed or angry with them. And don't let me hear you say,"I don't know where they learn such language!!".

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 4:53pm

How about writing an opinion on something that really matters...Say the economy, or the fact that we are at war with two countries that hope we all die. The f-word should be the least of our worries. Go get-um Chase!

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 3:13pm

Please, If anything it will likely EARN him millions...you can't buy the kind of all over publicity that his excited exclamation got. The the eff word should be put on the next redesign of the hundred dollar bill.

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 1:59pm

I find it interesting that the people that disagree with this article call it "rEdiculous" instead of ridiculous and seem to have trouble with punctuation and full sentences. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion on the matter, but those opinions are way more credible when gramatically correct.

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 1:26pm

Chase Utley just woont eh bleeping world series! Let him say whatever the bleep he wants! GO PHILS!!!! Bleep the Cowboys!

Sun, 11/09/2008 - 4:13am

Terrible article. Clearly you've done no research whatsoever.

"Utley is a 30-year old boy in a man’s body who has done little else in his life save play baseball."

First of all, Utley is one of the more stand-up players in the league, him and his wife are key supporters of the Philadelphia ASPCA and he has been outspoken in discussions on global warming. So whether you agree with that or not, the guy is not the token stupid jock that you portrayed him to be.

As for the moment, I personally loved it and I have come across few people who didn't. Any parents who watched it with their kids should simply tell their kids that they should not use that word and that should be that.

And also, when everything is said and done..

IT'S ONLY A WORD!

If I had children, I would rather they hear an excited baseball player utter the F-word than let them see horrible images of war, kidnapping, molestation and rape on the news. But I guess it's pretty foolish to think that way considering the harmful that a word that kids hear everyday on the playground anyway can be.

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 10:14pm

Sorry Jim Vanore, but I teach 7th and 8th grade and this word is in the everyday vocabulary of virtually EVERY male student and most of the females.

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 7:56pm

Can anyone even tell me why this is a bad word, did someone 150 years ago not like this word, and say, From this day on this will be known as a bad word. Give me a break , people really need to get a life and stop worrying about such little thing as a word

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 6:04pm

Wow. How are things in that vacuum of a world that you live in? Although, not the best choice of words, it is not something that is completely unheard in today's world.

Bob Kellys' hayday was in the 1970s. Not exactly living in the present.

Chase Utley is actually a stand up guy. All of the things wrong with the world today and you want to harp on his use of a word that is currently being debated in the Supreme Court over its usage...it has many. He has done much for the game of baseball , the city and yes, cats and dogs.

And he will not lose ANY endorsements, as a matter of fact I will check back after the spring when I am certain he has several new LARGE endorsement deal.

Petty..be a man

Hay 7:04 I hoped you enjoyed you last Tastykake, What do some of you do gooders do when you hear a curse in a movie walk out

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 3:19pm

Jim,
Im not sure I get your article at all.It might of been the worst article Ive ever read.I usually enjoy the Herald very much.I am not against you having a problem with Mr.Utleys choice of words.Evryone is entitled to thier opinion.I just think you went overboard here.I for one was not offended by this and I also watched the celebration with my children. They range in age some of whom needed it explained others did not. Using this word isnt a money issue for a man who has a 75 million dollar contract. This hasnt changed my impression of him at all.For todays athlete to take a contract under value for a player of his ability speaks of himself. He is an approachable athlete, team guy and hard working towards his profession. He and his wife also take care of and provide for abandoned and neglected animals. He is a giver not just a check writer. So in this world of who I want my children to look up to Chase is still one of them. His use of a word how ill timed or unfortunate does not define Chase nor do I think it should.I explained it to my children this way its just a shame you went another way.At the end of the article after telling of people using the wrong words you provided a sentence with a "bleep" isnt that really like using the word.I dont want my kids using bleep in any disguise of a word.We explain that as using the word in this house.Let it go Jim and enjoy yourself!!!!Life is to short to be caught up in a WORD!!!Many harsher words in the english language..
WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!

I am very dissapointed in this article, not because of the hypocracy but because after reading it I felt like you took the easy way out. When your grand daughter stared at you, mouth agape, it was a prime opportunity to instill positive values and put a positive spin on an admittedly boneheaded act. But you tore down an otherwise genuine, earnest, good person and told your impressionable grand daughter that he was the lowest of the low. You successfully paint the picture of Utley as a lowlife man-child. When he has, for all intents and purposes, been nearly he opposite his entire career. This article and the message you sent to your grand daughter could have been a positive one; something along the lines of, "He is a good guy, but that was inexcusable, people should think before they speak." That is a positive lesson you could teach. But instead you decided to go on a soapbox tirade as if he were a convicted pedophile or the ilk because he isnt as eloquent as you might like. If Nelson Mandela had yelled "I'm finally f'n free!" would that have made him a inately bad person? Next time you might want to try the road less traveled and admonish the act without making the person a pariah. Maybe you should think next time before you speak.

words....just words.

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 9:57am

Jim,
I couldn't agree with you more!! The positive responses to such a crude remark certainly put Philly fans in a negative light. There is a time and a place for everything.....Chase knew he would be speaking in front of men, women and CHILDREN. Shame on him and shame on those who haven't the class to see his error!

Sat, 11/08/2008 - 7:04am

What a buffoon. If his name is on a product I will not even think about purchasing it. I think he is one of the best ever 2nd basemen and it's a shame he is such an immature person. His agent must be dumbfounded. Some day he will grow up and maby be sorry.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 9:51pm

There was nothing offensive about Chase's statement of pure excitement, and if anything, you are the immature one for making a big fuss about it. All of our jaws dropped when he dropped the F-Bomb, but the truth is, no other words sum up the Phillies' current status better, than "World *** Champions".

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 9:39pm

Who ever wrote this story is clueless, Philly is a blue collar town, with a love for the F bomb. Why are so many people worried about a word, did this word physically hurt you. It's a word get over it, it means nothing.

Someone said fine him, fine him for what, freedom of speech. People are real dopes

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 8:25pm

I F'n doubt it! In this town, someone will pay him just to make a joke about his comment. If I were a marketing executive, I'd get him to say, "Widgets. Widgets are F'n great" So, Jim Vanore, look for it. I play that clip on my DVR every night at least five times; ten when it's been a bad day. LOL

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 6:37pm

Fine him yes, for he is supposed to be a roll model. But I must agree with the others, your article was inappropriately relayed to the public. I'm not sure what was worse the curse word or all of your innuendos.

You’re at the bottom of the ninth and the bases are loaded, maybe a better article might save your career.

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 2:51pm

He made a mistake (whether intentional or not) celebrating a very exciting season. Get over it and try to post articles that are worth the time to read!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 1:16pm

How many movies are out there with the f word in it or these shows that have bad words in them.... Family Guy south park comedy shows and you dont see them getting in trouble there shows are all still broadcasting it was a simple word! This article is rediculous! Everyone uses it sometime in there life.. They just worked there butt off to win the world series there all soo excited and im sure everyone was thinking it! Worry aout the drug dealers out there and child molesters not something so simple like this!!!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 1:04pm

Chase is a 1st class guy....like you never said the F word...GROW THE &^$& up and get a life......you probably voted for the OBAMANATION that will soon be President!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 12:45pm

Who cares? Philly fans are famous for having no class, that's why everyone cheered for three minutes. Then said to their kid it was wrong. Lost money on endorsments... LOL!! Can you 5 year 75 million????

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 11:17am

I find it hard to ever agree with you guys, but I do agree with you on this one. Personally, I didn't grow up until I had children. I believe that once he is a father, he will look back and be ashamed of his words. Yes, there is a time and place for everything. Unfortunately, it also goes to prove that most athletes and celebs have no class. They don't deserve the big bucks or the stage to act out their childhood and tantrums!!!

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 11:07am

People make mistakes... You need to realize it... Kobe Bryant is getting most of his endorsments back and he was charged with sexual assault... Give me a break

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 10:33am

I think you need to grow up. Stupid article.

Middle Baseball Association Seeks Indoor Batting Cages

Baseball | 3 weeks 6 days ago | Comments 0

By Joe Hart

COURT HOUSE — With the Phillies’ World Series championship still fresh in everyone’s mind, the Middle Township Baseball Association took the opportunity Monday night to ask township committee to approve plans for a new baseball project — striking while the iron was hot, so to speak.

The association, represented by attorney Tom Hillegas, wants to build a steel building at the township-owned Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex on Goshen Road. The building would house four batting cages and be heated and air conditioned for year round use.

Baseball is a game of inches.
What game isn’t?
It’s also a game of years. It takes years for most to become proficient at this game. As kids, we spent years playing baseball.
