Big beach, big bang in Wildwood

Features | 9 weeks 2 days ago | Comments 0

By Maureen Cawley

It takes teams of workers several days of work and a 150 by 200 foot field to set up the equipment needed for Wildwood's July Fourth fireworks.

Kimmel Schaefer says 22 years in the fireworks industry may have had an effect on his hearing. He can’t hear his wife tell him to take out the trash, but luckily he can still hear the ooh’s and ahh’s of the crowd at a fireworks show.
“It still gives me goose bumps,” he said.

Hereford Inlet's not-so-secret garden

See & Do | 13 weeks 7 hours ago | Comments 1

By Maureen Cawley

The lighthouse gardens are cottage style.

Remember the secret clubhouse you had in the yard as a kid? Or hiding above your parents heads in the branches of a giant oak tree?
That’s the quiet thrill you get when you enter the not-so-secret garden of the Hereford Lighthouse, in North Wildwood.
There, anytime of day, the beach traffic and the call of the Fudgy-Wudgy man melt away in the distance, and you are left to contemplate the patchwork of flowers, the songs of the birds and the almost solitary shuffle of your feet along the wooded pathways.

The Gardens at the Lighthouse are extraordinary. It's the very first place we take visitors on their arrival in the Wildwoods! Mr. Murry does a wonderful job!

The start of the tourism season in the Wildwoods is upon us.
The Boardwalk is open for business, the rides are in operation and hotel/motel reservations, and rentals are strong.
The Wildwoods boast the most free events around, and, being only one tank of gas away from four major metropolitan areas, it’s a travel bargain.
It doesn’t matter what date you plan to vacation, or even if you’re only taking a quick weekend trip, there’s always something waiting for you to explore in the Wildwoods.

Resident Eugene Klein explains his exhibit on the history of Stone Harbor’s train travel and development.

Stone Harbor Museum President Nancy Cope said that trains are always a big draw for history buffs, and that’s why they asked resident Eugene Klein to apply his technical skills to an exhibit that gathers those memories together and demonstrates the impact train travel had on the development of Stone Harbor.

“It’s interesting. It all had to do with transportation,” Cope said.
