To The Editor: On June 3, the registered voters of Stone Harbor will cast their ballots for mayor and two council positions. This election process will determine the future direction of the town. Mayor Suzanne Walters will be seeking a four-year term. Walters with her county contacts has most recently been involved in the development of the plan for a library/museum complex to be built in Stone Harbor in 2009. She has also recently been instrumental in Trenton, at the State level, in changing the thinking on affordable housing obligations for shore communities. This effort has reduced Stone Harbor’s affordable housing (COAH) obligation to no units through 2018. Her ability to reach out to state and county, her pleasant demeanor, and her natural ability to publicly conduct herself in difficult situations makes the case for her re-election. Tom Cope and Joanne Vaul who will be seeking three-year terms on borough council will join the mayor. These positions are extremely important to the future of Stone Harbor, and it is necessary to have only the strongest and best candidates. Both Cope and Vaul draw on extensive experience from their professional lives and continue to share their expertise in their community service endeavors. They are both universal in their approach, fair minded, positive, even-handed and respectful. These two candidates are thinkers and doers. They both work on the many sanctioned committees that contribute to improvement of Stone Harbor as a place to work, live, and recreate. Both are deeply involved in the important New Jersey State mandated Master Plan project seeking real solutions to meet future challenges for Stone Harbor. Through their involvement in borough affairs, they have developed the necessary respect for the process and our representative form of government. It is important to have people of their caliber serving our community. They understand that Stone Harbor is primarily a resort/tourist destination and that we must continually upgrade, and expand our amenities and facilities in such a way to attract those very important visitors. We need candidates who address the needs of the community with a broad inclusive perspective. Walters, Cope, and Vaul are the obvious and recommended candidates. They deserve your votes. CARL L. WANNEN Stone Harbor (ED. NOTE: The June 3 election is the primary election to select candidates who will stand for election Nov. 4.)
