To The Editor: On April 29, multiple injuries occurred to cyclists, peddling on Tuckahoe Road near Mount Pleasant. My question is, did any State Police report these conditions prior to this incident? They had a duty to do just that, and maybe the holes would have been fixed in a reasonable time. If they didn't, and there should be a road repair work order on file, then someone is at fault, and action should be taken to ensure this would not happen again. I assume the holes went unattended for some time, and were big enough for this incident to occur. The state police are so focused on motor vehicle violations, that they lose sight of their full duties. The fatality of two young girls hit by a state trooper, could also have been prevented if someone had the foresight to report the need for traffic control signage at that intersection. Public servants need to be reminded daily that they are out there for the safety of all citizens. Their job description is not limited to traffic violators. I bet they don't even review those duties. Preventive measures on the road, as well as in the home, should be foremost in our minds. If someone reported these pot holes and they weren't fixed, they should come forward. These cyclists sustained serious injuries because someone didn't do the job that we pay them to do. FRANCIS GRAFF Sea Isle City

I'm not so sure it was a race, just a club group ride(even though some people will treat it like a race :) ). Either way it shows you can't be too careful out there on the road. Group riding is inherently dangerous and requires a lot of practice and skill. I have personally seen many bad accidents, broken pelvis', collerbones, lost teeth etc. due to riders who were not up to the task. Just because someone spent a lot of time in the gym and bought an expensive bike and some lycra doesn't make them a skilled rider.

the people who were in charge of the bike race should have looked over the roads before the race begain. and who cares anyway, your going to fix every pot hole for a bike race give me a break.

Part of riding a road bike is identifying and signaling debris and road conditions to the riders following. It is the cyclists reponsiblity to make the necessary adjustments for road hazards.
