The Beach Theatre Foundation announced today that it will participate in Pangea Day, a global event bringing the world together through film.

Starting at 2 p.m. on May 10, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers.

The entire program will be broadcast in seven languages and for free to millions of people worldwide at participating theatres as well as through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

"In a world where we are too often reminded of our differences, it's easy to lose sight of what we have in common," said Steve Jackson, president of the Beach Theatre Foundation Board. "Pangea Day uses the power of film to remind us what we share. We're extremely proud to be a Friend of Pangea Day and hope that the community will come out for this special event."
The four-hour broadcast will begin at 2 p.m. at the Beach Theatre and admission is free.

The 24 short films to be featured have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over 100 countries. The program will also include a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN's Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among those taking part.

The event was conceived through the wish of award-winning documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, who in 2006, won the TED Prize, an annual award granted at the TED Conference. She was granted $100,000, and, more important, a wish to change the world. Her wish was to create a day in which the world came together through film, and Pangea Day was born.

Pangea is the name of the landmass that existed 250 million years ago before it split into separate continents, and serves as a reminder that what now appears divided was once whole.
