Cape May County Library will offer a video Game Night on Friday that promises to be both fun and educational.

As if he doesn’t play enough video games at home, your 13- through 25-year old can sign up for the Cape May County Library’s Game Night on Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. I guess they need stiffer competition than what they can get in the family room.

Certainly, I offer my kids no run for their money, since I can’t even get a ball over the net in Mario Tennis, never mind blowing an enemy’s head off with an AK47 in Call of Duty.

Game Night at the library, however, promises to offer various forms of competitive and cooperative entertainment for gamers more enthusiastic than me.

As advertised, “Game stations will be set up and running on four LCD televisions offering such popular titles as Rock Band for the Xbox 360, Super Smash Brothers Brawl for Wii, Mario Kart: Double Dash for the Gamecube, and Dance Dance Revolution!” For those who can’t distinguish a controller from a remote garage door opener, card games including Uno and Apples to Apples will also be available.

Game Night will focus on the educational aspect of playing video games. Through trial and error, players can learn problem-solving strategies, as well as eye/hand coordination. Hmmm. Seems to me I just read a recent study which found that first-year college students whose roommates brought a video game console to college studied, on average, 40 minutes less per day. That’s a shocker! The loss of those precious 40 minutes of study time actually translated into an average drop of almost 0.25 points on a 4.0 grading scale. No way!

Anyway, the event sounds like fun. It will be limited to 28 participants, so registration is required. You’ll need a valid county library card in good standing to sign up. Keep your eye out at the library for posters and the library’s Web site, www.cmclibrary.org for the next date of the monthly activity.

And if gaming is not your thing, you might want to head over to the PAC for the Middle Township Middle School presentation of “Annie Get Your Gun.” Performances will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10/adults, $8/students and senior citizens.
