
He was also honored with a Special Recognition award for his years of service as the announcer at the AKA Nationals.
Broder's entry in the Cellular/Dimensional category (typically box kites and other 3-D shapes) finished with a score of 31.3 out of a possible 40.0, and had the highest Visual Appeal score in the category. The kite, called a marconi, featured a lotus flower design Broder found on a calendar. He used reverse appliqué to sew the design to the kite, which features 11 colors of fabric and a 100-foot tail. His kite finished behind only a box kite built by California's Tom McAlister, who recently worked as a consultant to Paramount Vantage Studios on the soon-to-be-released film "The Kite Runner."
The AKA Grand Nationals were held the first week of October in Ocean Shores, Washington. More than 300 kitefliers from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and England participated. The 2008 Nationals will be in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, beginning September 22.
Broder is the editor of KITING magazine, active with the South Jersey Kite Flyers, and has been the announcer at the Wildwoods International Kite Festival since 2003. He is the Director of Education at the Wetlands Institute.
