Middle Baseball Association Seeks Indoor Batting Cages

Baseball | 3 weeks 6 days ago | Comments 0

By Joe Hart

COURT HOUSE — With the Phillies’ World Series championship still fresh in everyone’s mind, the Middle Township Baseball Association took the opportunity Monday night to ask township committee to approve plans for a new baseball project — striking while the iron was hot, so to speak.

The association, represented by attorney Tom Hillegas, wants to build a steel building at the township-owned Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex on Goshen Road. The building would house four batting cages and be heated and air conditioned for year round use.

DIAMOND BEACH — The U.S. Coast Guard Long Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) Support Unit Oct. 17 hosted the 10th annual East Coast Military Surfing Championships.

The contest, with about 60 contenders, originated in Virginia Beach, Va. to improve “esprit de corps” and it is open to all military ranks and branches.

Since many Coast Guard stations are seaside, often guardsmen and women practice water sports.

“The event was established to bring all military groups together,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Gary Shannon, event coordinator.

I wish I would have hear that this event was taking place. Is there a website that post this kind of information? Congrats to all entered.

Its funny that if the locals who love to surf here try to get on the beach the troops come out to kick them out. If all the wildlife people are so concerned about plovers and other animals nesting in this area why is it ok to have this contest? Last time I was on this beach you would have though i had a bomb in my backpack or a flame thrower to kill all the plovers in the dunes. If it is such a chore for everyone to surf here then hold the contest somewhere else. Fair is fair.

Township, Taxpayers Face Off Over Hockey Rink Contract

Hockey | 7 weeks 6 days ago | Comments 2

By Joe Hart

COURT HOUSE — Some taxpayers are irked at Middle Township Committee for awarding a lucrative recreation construction contract to a local company that they think already owes the township money.

The $329,836 contract to build a new street hockey rink at the Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex on Goshen Road went to Albrecht and Heun, a mining and recycling company that’s involved in litigation over a disputed sum of money owed to the township for recycling host community benefits.

Kudos to Joe hart and the Herald for continuing to educate residents about these critical issues. It takes a lot of courage to do what Madelyn Filipski did, questioning the established order. But she, and a few others, and the press, are helping residents realize that it is no longer about the old-boys-network and a "closed group" running the community. Sometimes I agree with what they do, and sometimes I do not; the important thing is that we are beginning to exercise the right to speak up. As for the committee member who treated Madelyn rudely - you really need to look into yourself to figure out the source of your cynicism and bitterness, and try to encourage townspeople rather than cutting them down.

Can somebody tell me why all the Township recreation projects are in teh goshen area. I know that the rink at railroad ave has become a problem but we have other places. Why can't we use the area on Fulling Mill road or fix the area on railroad if we give the kids a better place more people would use it. The rink in lower at Bennett's Crossing is really nice and is Fenced at night to keep people out. Why can't we do this at Railroad ave? Do we really need a dog park. The last time i checked dogs are not the future of this community. It is time for the three blind mice to open there eyes to what the community needs and not what is best for a few. This township does not stop at Shellbay ave. I hope we are all paying atention and like I'v been seeing alot it's time for a change. Even the President can only serve eight years why can a inaffective committee be in ower until they chose to leave wake up Middle Township before it too late.

Every year this event gets bigger & better. Was there Saturday & had a fantastic time.
People in the crowds were friendly, the food was great & the racing was fabulous!!

Your comment is duly noted, and the headline has been adjusted. Thank you!

The tournament was an excellent event for all the girls. That being said your headline is extremely deceiving! The Lower Twp girls did win overall points with an impressive showing but I hope your readers follow though with the article to see that other teams had more category winners.

These activities promote self-esteem and validate self-worth. They also bridge the gaps between generations and separate sectors of Durham.

The public is being asked to help the Middle Township Recreation Department to welcome the D3 Community Outreach back to the Martin Luther King Center for the second year as they strive to reach their goals.

I think there should be a Softball game between the Lower Township Taxpayers Association and the Lower Township Police. Since the LTTA likes to take swings at the Police, maybe we can get something going here!! We could charge $5 a person to watch and all proceeds could go to the Lower Township general coffer to help alleviate the tax increase. Side bets would be allowed as long as the Township was able to collect 20% of all winnings. All proceeds from the concession stand would go to the Freeman Douglass Park Grass Replenishment Project and proceeds from the 50 - 50 would go to feeding the cats at Douglass Park!! Lets slide on down to "C" shall we !
