This drill is preparation for the upcoming tourist season, when the congestion of parked vehicles makes managing hoses and accessing hydrants more difficult.

in all my years in North Wildwood, i have never seen the fire dept practice drills such as these. In one way it good to prepare but in another sence, it sends the message that the city is trying to justify it needs 3 fire stations for a town only one and a half miles long with high property taxes.

Just an F.Y.I for all the people that complain about training. Fire department drills for paid and volunteer, for on and off the island are necessary. Most cars that we use are given to us for a couple hundred dollars which isnt that much if we have joint drills like Erma and Villas drill and houses are normally free since they are getting demolished. More people need to notice the time and effort that go into each and every drill.

When an emergency or disaster strikes, who do you call? Oh yes...911!
We as citizens and taxpayers expect SERVICE, rapid response and professionalism at a moments notice, no matter the time of day or night. Ongoing training is what makes Cape May's Dept proactive and current for any and all possible situations. Whether you live in Cape May or a surrounding neighborhood, you should be thankful and appreciative of the capabilities these men dedicate themselves to each and every day.
They could be coming to your aid one day, now couldn't they? And you will be happy they did!

If you pay taxes in lower you dont live in cape may. So why be so concerned with what money cape may spends, because it didn't come from your pocket.

Obviously the person who commented about money well spent in Lower Township is as ignorant as they are mis-informed. The constant training that ALL Firefighters do is time consuming and difficult. A combination Fire Dept. like Cape May gives its taxpayers a quick response with a crew of well trained professionals. If you are not happy with your fire protection in Lower then maybe a trip to a council meeting is in order. As for getting paid to sleep I guess you have never observed any other Career Fire Dept.'s in the country that have bunks in their firehouses, but I guess someone with that much knowledge of the Fire Service doesn't need to be up on such things. Good Luck with your sore ego.

The last comment must be from a jealous volunteer. Take the test and become career and reap the benefits.
p.s. Your overstuffed fire district money and wasted spending on duplicated equpment will soon come to an end. Get over it and grow up.

I appauld the Cape May Fire Dept. for taking the time to simulate such an incident so they are prepared when it happens. There must have been alot of time put in to the set up of such an event. While other Fire Companies on the island play cards and sulk, the firefighters from Cape May always seem to be strieving to provide the best services possible. Keep up the good work.

One day they might have to do this. Till then I hope your million dollar " t " budget is worthy of a trip to the hospital with a 90 DNR patient. Thank goodness i can atleast see my money being well spent in lower, minus tax dollars for sleeping in bunks and geting paid for it.

paid fire departments! no more social clubs
Mon, 05/12/2008 - 10:01pm
Another thing about the amount of the fire departments needed is at 2:30 in the afternoon most volunteers are at work. So obviously they were short handed. Ohh I guess since you commented on this incident at nearly 4 am you dont have to go to work in the morning.
Mon, 05/12/2008 - 4:24pm
I would like to say that all fire departments involved and the Chief in charge at the fire scene that day did an outstanding job. Their hours of training showed in the tremendously quick response time in getting onsite and extinguishing the fire in such a short timeframe.
Our family and employees can't thank all the fireman and other parties involved enough for an outstanding job that day in saving our building.
Thank you again and all of you involved should be very proud of yourselves.

If it was your building you wouldnt knock the large scale response now would you. The fire departments in this area rely soley on tankers being no hydrants are available These men and woman are highly trained in what they do and saved that building that day. My praise goes out to these volunteers on a job well done no matter what resources they use. Maybe you could learn a little bit if you volunteered, and then you will see the hundreds of hours spent training and also what resources are utilized and used on the array of different emergencies these volunteers respond to.
Mon, 05/12/2008 - 10:12am
The reason for multiple fire departments comes down to simple economics. According to the news report this fire required that water be pumped from Dennisville lake and hauled by tanker to the fire scene. This would require several tankers costing several hundred thousand dollars each. It also required additional engines to pump the water at several hundred thousand dollars each. How many trucks would you like Dennisvile Fire to own and operate? Also, since the fire hall is full of trucks they would need another station to house the trucks. Then, if they did have a new station and new trucks they would need people like yourself to volunteer rather than criticize. In order for all this to happen your taxes would skyrocket. Its up to the people of Dennisville. The alternative would be to continue to use resources wiseley by relying on mutual aid from surrounding departments who come together to save your life and property.
Mon, 05/12/2008 - 3:42am
why did it take so many fire departments, the building isn't that big. Do our fearless firefighters need to be retrained, so they can handle these kind of calls.
