Captain, Avalon Beach Patrol

By Wolf

Dear Editor,
In response to the spouter about the Avalon lifeguards flipping the surfboat: this individual clearly does not have a clue about ocean water lifeguarding, training, or rowing. The Avalon Beach Patrol has a long and valued tradition of using surfboats to rescue swimmers that need assistance. The Avalon Beach Patrol has also produced many South Jersey rowing champions and rowing champions of the various lifeguard races held throughout the summer. In order to teach rookie lifeguards, veteran lifeguards must row with younger guards in rough seas to train these younger guards how to row in rough conditions. Any experienced oarsman knows that flipping the boat in a rough ocean is very common. At the South Jersey Lifeguard Championships on August 16th in Ventnor some of the best rowers in South Jersey flipped their surfboats. Training in rough seas is a credit to the men and women of the Avalon Beach Patrol. It takes a great deal of courage and toughness to row in a rough ocean. It does not take any courage or toughness to make an anonymous posting in a newspaper.
