‘American Nation Ship’ Hits Damaging Iceberg

By Hollis

To The Editor:
We are a nation that has always been divided in some fashion or manner. Our moral and political divisions seem larger and more pronounced today since the Democrats took control of our government. The far left’s scorn for traditional principles, moral values and cohesiveness has risen dramatically as they vigorously defend their sociopolitical “turf.”
Some scholars point to the 1960s as the decade the “American Experiment Nation Ship” hits its most damaging iceberg. In prior years the ship remained afloat notwithstanding some economic storms, a civil war and slavery. But the counter-culture iceberg that struck the ship in the 1960s was vastly different. It brought with it a blatant and loud rejection of law and order, a ripping rebuke of traditional moral values, a tearing away of standards and a drowning concept of traditional marriage.
Since that decade forward we have found ourselves awash in increased lawlessness, disrespect for our elders, out of wedlock births, unnatural affections, guilt, immorality, and divisive tolerances. The large hole ripped in our society below the moral water line caused the “American Experience Nation Ship” to list badly to port. Flares were sent up all over the nation by conservative independents, patriots and other law-abiding citizens but there were few who would listen.
But are there solutions to our waterlogged social ills and our sinking deviant behaviors? Can we save our ship from sinking? Unlike the Titanic we still have a short time to find solutions. But solutions are slippery things and aren’t always popular or pretty. They don’t always make us feel good and this could be why so many are avoided.
The nation is akin to a sick patient suffering from a million cuts. Each cut bleeds money, economic instability, immorality, high taxes, excessive spending, leadership weakness and disdain for the American people. And the current administration in Washington seems to have no desire for the patient to get well.
And when conservative passengers on our nation-ship put forth any suggestions or solutions that might heal the cuts and stop the bleeding, their ideas are automatically dismissed without any consideration. Why? Because they might advocate medicine and treatments like self-initiatives, common sense, self-respect, traditional marriage, parental responsibility, spending controls, cutting taxes, strengthening the military, tough love, and law and order. However, liberals are willing to go down with the ship rather than adopt any of these treatments. And it is exactly that attitude that makes it imperative that they be voted out of office in 2010 and 2012.
Read any newspaper and watch any televised broadcast and it’s clear that the “American Experience Nation Ship” is in troubled waters and going down by the bow. The tough decisions and actions required to rescue us will not come from Washington but from the minds of the American people.
