PRESS RELEASE FROM ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS:
(TRENTON) – Legislation honoring Cape May veterans sponsored by Assemblymen Nelson T. Albano and Matthew W. Milam was released today (Monday, June 8) by an Assembly committee.
The bill (A-3788) would designate the Route 109 bridge over the Cape May Canal between Cape May City and Lower Township as the Cape May County Veterans Memorial Bridge.
“New Jersey’s citizens are indebted to the sacrifice and heroism of the brave men and woman who have served their country in the armed forces, many of whom call Cape May County home,” Milam said. “Dedicating this bridge in memory and honor of the men and women of Cape May County who have served will be a constant reminder for all of the sacrifices made by veterans on behalf of their country and state.”
More than 12,000 veterans currently reside in Cape May County.
“Veterans from Cape May County have served in many different capacities and are represented by local chapters and posts of every major veterans organization,” Albano said. “It’s only proper that we memorialize and honor the thousands of county residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces by renaming this bridge.”
The bill mandates that no state or other public money be used for producing, purchasing or erecting signs bearing the designation and authorizes the state transportation commissioner to receive gifts, grants or other financial assistance from private sources to pay the associated costs.
The bill was released 10-0 by the Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee. It now goes to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post it for a floor vote.
