“I’ve been seeing some strange casting,” laughed Bud Lyon of Ocean City at the sixth annual Junior Surf Fishing Tournament, a catch-and-release event, which took place recently on the beach in Strathmere. Sponsored by the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club, 130 children registered for the event.
Mayor Rich Palombo was there to present the prizes at the awards’ ceremony which immediately followed the tournament. Winning a surf rod about three times his size, was Brendin Courant, 6-1/2 years old, of Sicklerville. Brendin caught the largest flounder, measuring 14 inches.
The biggest bluefish of the day, at 14 inches, was caught by Tom Alexander, age eight, of Mt. Laurel. Tommy Boyle, seven years old, from Phila. and Sea Isle City, caught the largest shark, measuring 19-1/2 inches.
There were lots of other winners among the kids as each child received a raffle ticket upon registration, and many prizes were given out including fishing equipment and gift certificates for Mike’s Seafood, The Old Shack, Whale Creek Marina, and Frank’s boats. And the winners are …Jen Fayter received first-place honors in the Schiavo Library’s “Cooking with Books – Jersey-Fresh Desserts” contest. Her winning dessert entry was peach ice cream in homemade sugar cookie sandwiches.
Second place went to Lynn Fayter for her key lime pie with fresh blueberry sauce. Rose Rhine won third-place honors for her chocolate chip Kahlua cake. Members of the library, located in Strathmere, were treated to a taste of the delectable desserts after the prizes were awarded.

Flying High – Stunt pilots, aerobatic champions, and a formation team are just some of the aerial acts, which will take to the skies for the second annual Boardwalk Aerobatic Air Show in Ocean City. Keep an eye to the sky from 1-3 p.m. in the area of sixth to 14th streets on Sept. 20, for this spectacular show.

Healthy Living for Older Adults – The Cape May County Library will be hosting “Health Ease,” a series of free one-hour workshops for older adults focusing on living healthier, more independent lives. The sessions will be held on Mondays, from 2-3 p.m., at the Cape May County Main Library, located at 30 Mechanic St. in Court House.
