Preservation New Jersey (PNJ), the statewide historic preservation advocacy and education organization, announced the winners of their Best of New Jersey Heritage Tourism 2009 contest, and Wildwoods-by-the-Sea, the shore town best known for it’s remarkable collection of mid-20th century resort architecture, took first place with 217 votes.
The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood came in second with 134 votes, and the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms in Parsippany, third, with 49 votes.
Other popular submissions included: Cadwalader Heights Historic District in Trenton, the Alice Paul Institute in Mount Laurel, the River Line Bed and Breakfast Inn in Riverton, Allaire Village and the restored locomotive in Allaire State Park, Ferry Slip Museum in Perth Amboy, Haddie the Hadrosaurus in Haddonfield, and Lucy the Elephant in Margate.
There were 35 total submissions (http://tinyurl.com/m4ssfc)
This multi-part contest aimed to encourage the public’s involvement in heritage tourism in New Jersey and to promote the state’s unique heritage tourism destinations.
From late June through August 3, PNJ solicited public nominations of the public’s favorite heritage tourism sites throughout the state.
Nominators were asked to submit a summary about their favorite heritage tourism destination in New Jersey along with images of the site. The submissions were then posted in an online poll open for public voting from August 3-10.
The nominator of the public’s favorite site, based on poll voting, has won a vacation package, including a free weekend in Cape May courtesy of the Leith Hall and a gift certificate to Cape May Italian restaurant Cucina Rosa.
PNJ encourages the public to investigate the renowned, one-of-a-kind historic and cultural sites throughout New Jersey and support heritage tourism in the Garden State.
