Harbor Council Extends Rafting Beach

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR – Borough Council July 21 permitted surfboards, body boards and rafts on 116th Street beach “in direct response to comments at the last meeting about crowding at 117th Street,” Beach and Recreation Chairwoman Joanne Vaul said.
A resident of 117th Street told council July 7 traffic and crowds had become a problem due to the popularity of that beach.
She said some beaches were empty while others were overloaded.
Beach Patrol Captain Sandy Bosacco said most people use some type of raft in the water.
However, he noted some prefer not to swim near them because of the possibility to get hit.
Rafts are allowed at 83rd, 87th, 93rd, 96th, 100th, 108th, 116th and 117th streets.
