Reagan: "Where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost."

In a Labor Day address in 1980, while running for president, Ronald Reagan reminded us of the values inspiring those brave workers in Poland uprising against their repressive government. Some of the worst governments the world has known went after the trade unions. Hitler didn't want unions. Stalin didn't want unions. Mubarak didn't want independent unions. These autocrats in history don't want independent unions.

History teaches us that unions are a very positive force in society that creates a middle class and that protects our freedom. Don't tell us you support collective bargaining in Poland but you oppose collective bargaining in Wisconsin, or Ohio, or Indiana.

FDR-
“Meticulous attention should be paid to the special relations and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the Government….The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service"

"a strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to obstruct the operations of government until their demands are satisfied. Such action looking toward the paralysis of government by those who have sworn to support it is unthinkable and intolerable"

1943 NY Supreme Court Judge:

To tolerate or recognize any combination of civil service employees of the government as a labor organization or union is not only incompatible with the spirit of democracy, but inconsistent with every principle upon which our government is founded. Nothing is more dangerous to public welfare than to admit that hired servants of the State can dictate to the government the hours, the wages and conditions under which they will carry on essential services vital to the welfare, safety, and security of the citizen. To admit as true that government employees have power to halt or check the functions of government unless their demands are satisfied, is to transfer to them all legislative, executive and judicial power. Nothing would be more ridiculous.

I quoted Reagan because he's a Republican hero. Of course, within the year Reagan broke the back of the air traffic controllers union. The very fact Reagan could fire the 11,345 striking air traffic controllers and business go on without them directly contradicts the assertion government is held hostage, powerless against dangerous public unions. The air traffic controllers are now represented by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.

Why wouldn't I bring it up. It's just one of the ridiculous lies that guys like you tolerate from your chosen leaders. How could you believe stuff like this?

How did a thread entitled "shared sacrifice" turn into Reagenomics?
The public unions and the politicians of the third millennium are draining the middle class through absurd collective bargaining. I wonder if there is a way to declare the non-union middle class working taxpayers endangered and on the verge of extinction.

"Shared Sacrifice"

Michigan: The Republican governor will cut schools, universities and local governments by $1.2 Billion, ending his state’s Earned Income Tax Credit for low wage earners, cutting a $600 per child tax credit, and reducing credits for seniors, while school districts lose eight to ten percent.

At the same time, the state’s business taxes would be reduced by $1.8 Billion, or 86 percent. Thousands of taxpayers rallied to protest the Republican plan.

Ohio: Republican Gov. John Kasich to cut 25% from public schools, cut children's hospitals by $12 million, adoption programs by $15.9 million, and cut $1 million from food banks. Shared sacrifice?

The former Fox news anchor will cut taxes for oil companies, a tax cut for the rich and repeal of the estate tax on the wealthy.

Florida: Republican Gov. Rick Scott wants to slash corporate taxes while cutting education and medicaid by $4 billion each.

Georgia: Republican House Leader pushes budget to cut corporate taxes 33% while increasing health care costs for state workers by more than 20 percent.

Iowa: Republican governor wants a corporate tax cut and a "freeze" on school spending, not quite as radical, but radical.

Kansas: Republican governor favors eliminating corporate income tax altogether, while cutting $50 million to education.

Maine: Tea Party Republican Gov. Paul LePage wants a tax cut for the state's richest one percent and a property tax INCREASE for everyone else.

Pennsylvania: Republican governor proposes a corporate tax cut and a freeze on teachers' salaries.

South Carolina: Republican governor wants to end corporate income tax, and cut physical education from schools along with Medicaid reductions.

Wisconsin, New Jersey....

OHIO: Republican John Kasich with 49% beat his Democrat opponent with 47% last November. If the election were held today, the Republican union-busting governor would lose 40 to 55.

MICHIGAN: Republican Rick Snyder took office in November with a favorability rating of 59%. Today, the anti-union radical is at 44% approval, a drop of 15 percent.

WISCONSIN: In November, 35% said unfavorable of Republican Scott Walker. But this month, that worsened 18 points to 53% unfavorability for the Koch-funded anti-labor Republican.

New polls are in, giving grades to these worker-busting Republican governors:

Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker won in November by 6 points.
The latest polls say if the election were held today, he would lose to that same Democrat by 7 points.

Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich won in November by two points.
Today he would lose to the same Democrat by 15 points.

Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott won in November by one point.
Today he would lose to that same Democrat by 19 points.

Michigan Republican Gov. Rick Snyder won in November by a whopping eighteen points.
Today he has swung twenty points in the other direction and he would lose by two.

The topic seems to be which government program is worse: Wall Street bailouts or public schools.

reason.tv | To Surly, With Love (1 min, 11 sec)

It seems like governments spend over three times as much per pupil now than they did in the 1960s, and with apparently marginal benefits. Then on the other hand, you have these bailouts, whose initial price tag was in the hundreds of billions of dollars. As the government sells it's stock, though, it is apparently getting some of that back. I haven't looked at it in a while, so I don't know exactly how much, but I'm sure Ramjet and C&R have the figures on hand.

Go ahead and run the numbers. I'm mildly curious to see which of these government programs is the bigger boondoggle.

The point of the poll results I posted to this thread was the unpopularity of the Republican attacks on workers and teachers. On this topic of "Shared Sacrifice," which Republicans pretend to embrace, the public opposes Republicans budget cuts to schools who at the same time cut taxes on corporations and the wealthy. .

I just don't see how cutting an education budget can be considered school reform. At the same time holding teachers accountable to standard test results. Might as well throw out the Text books and have teachers use the test as their lesson guide. Education is being destroyed in the guise of being improved. I fear for our future.

Who says the problem with schools are their budgets? Why is the answer always money? How much of NJ budget goes toward education?

The problem is the money goes to the wrong places and the cuts hit the wrong places. Money is the problem.
