VILLAS—Captain Brian Marker will be the next chief of police for Lower Township after Chief of Police Edward P. Donohue retires June 30. Marker was already next in line for the position and will be officially promoted July 1. The Lower Township Town Council ap-proved his position in Monday’s meeting on June 20.
According to Lower Township City Manager Michael Voll, the town is still working on some minor parts of Marker’s contract. As part of now, in the three-year contract Marker will receive $102,500 a year until he is certified by the New Jersey Department of Personnel. The process involves a verbal interview, scheduled for December. After that, Marker will receive $130,000 a year.
Lower Township Council honored Dispatcher Dottie Crawford and Donohue. Donohue served with the Lower Township Police Department for 27 years. According to Voll, he did an “outstanding job.” Donohue then thanked his wife, family and officers for their support, with special thanks to his father, William B. Donohue, a police chief himself, who passed away one month ago. “My dad is the reason I got into this profession and I know I carry a lot of his personality traits with me,” Donohue said.
Donohue then asked for a moment of silence for a Lower Township Police Officer, who should have been retiring as well, Officer David C. Douglass, Sr. who was killed in the line of duty after exchanging gunfire with a burglary suspect in North Cape May in 1994.
Crawford is also retiring July 1. A full time dispatcher going back to 1976, she was also recognized for starting the Lower Township Police Christmas Toy and Food Drive which has donated toys and food to hundreds of families during the holidays, for over 30 years.
Township Council then presented Donohue with a Letter of Commendation. The last line read, “Therefore, be it resolved that his actions shall not go unrewarded, he is to be commended for a job well done. ”
