CAPE MAY—Various local politicians and community members watched a presentation given by Atlantic Wind Connection a future subsea high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system on Friday, June 24. The proposal to build a 350 mile transmission system will be able to transmit 6,500 to 7,000 megawatts from wind farms to homes spanning from Northern New Jersey to Southern Virginia.
The proposed HVDC transmission line will be built 12 or more miles off the coast. CEO Bob Mitchell of Atlantic Wind Connection described the system as a “inter-state highway with entrances and exits” connecting wind farms all along the coast. It will take 5 phases and 10 years to build.
Mitchell said the transmission line will replace five coal plants and cut CO2 emissions by 15 million tons—equal to taking 3 million automobiles off the road. He also said that Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania paid up to $1.8 billion in congestions costs, because there is not enough transmission lines to move energy efficiently. The project will relieve that pressure, according to Mitchell.
In addition, Mitchell said he “hopes to create a whole new industry for the mid-Atlantic” and Atlantic Wind Connection “wants to create jobs… and get manufacturing here in the U.S.” Most wind energy technology is imported from Europe or China. “We won’t get the industry here if there’s no large off-shore system,” he said.
