CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council received a recommendation, Sept. 19, for the future use of the current library building.

The council charged a library task force with making recommendations for the repurposing of the current library building once the branch library moves to the historic Franklin Street School location. Task force members Ronnie Cohen and Daniel Magariel brought the recommendation to repurpose the building as a community center to the council, and presented the results of a survey that may guide programming there.

Noting that city recreation programs are “homed throughout the city in multiple locations,” the task force saw the availability of the library space as a natural location for pulling together many current and future programming for residents and visitors.

A survey on possible programming ideas received over 500 responses with an almost even distribution between year-round residents (45%) and second homeowners (43%), with the remainder of the responses being visitors and seasonal renters.

The top five areas of desired programming were fitness classes, historical/musical programs, children and family events, senior programs, and an author/lecture series.
