PETERSBURG – The mayor and Upper Township Committee are again stressing that beachgoers need to stay off the dunes along Strathmere beaches in Upper Township.
Mayor Jay Newman, June 26, repeated a call that has been issued for weeks, warning residents and visitors to exercise caution around dunes, particularly where storm erosion has left cliffs.
Newman warned that the dunes, 10 or 12 feet high in some areas, could collapse and lead to a fall or bury a person. In either case, he said, the collapse could lead to injury.
Generally, walking on the dunes can be considered a disorderly persons offense and the violator would be subject to a fine of up to $1,000.
“Please tell your friends and family – stay off the dunes,” Newman said.
