By Herald Staff

VILLAS — At approximately 1:10 p.m., police today (Thursday, April 15) responded to a call regarding an unearthed mortar shell at 1638 Bayshore Road.
An owner of AABA Family Medical Supply, Steve Ritondo told the Herald that during an expansion project at its location, construction workers unearthed what appeared to be a live mortar shell about 2 1/2 inches wide and a foot long. He said the shell appeared to be made of brass and weighed about 25 pounds.
Workers poked the shell with a shovel and crowbar before police arrived.
Lower Township police contacted the Atlantic City Bomb Squad and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution. Bystanders were also pushed back 300 feet. The shell was removed by 3 p.m.
